About this listen

They drowned Victoire's mother, claiming she was a witch. Then, her father died beneath the wheels of a nobleman's carriage. Forced to leave her village, Victoire finds work in Paris. But domestic employment comes at a high price, and the orphaned girl suffers gruesome abuse at the hands of a diabolical aristocracy.

Accused of a heinous crime, they imprison her in the depraved lunatic asylum, La Salpêtriere. With the help of ruthless seductress, Jeanne de Valois - con-woman of the Necklace Affair that brought down Marie Antoinette - Victoire must find the strength to join the revolutionary force storming the Bastille.

Can she survive a chilling betrayal and rise above her impoverished peasant roots to take her place in this new, post-revolutionary France?

Based on historical fact, Spirit of Lost Angels is a riveting testament to the courage of women facing tragedy, betrayal, and insanity in a world where their gift can be their curse.

Epic!

This is truly a sweeping epic of a story, set against the background of the time leading up to and during the French Revolution. We see a long span of the main character's life, and Liza Perrat does a great job showing her evolution from a country girl to a powerful, worldly woman.

The narration is fantastic and I love the voice Jennifer Jill Araya gave to Victoire. It drew me in and carried the story beautifully. And while it's clear that French isn't native for her, she handles the challenges of the language gracefully. Brava!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Heart-wrenching, Strength of Spirit

This was a heart-wrenching tale. The author did not sugar-coat anything. The life of Victoire was harsh. It was nice to see she did have angels around her, helping as much as they could. The affirmation of Victoire's hope in humanity never faltering was also hopeful. I found the research by author Liza Perrat a wonderful addition to this historical fiction of the time around the French Revolution and the overall treatment of the lower class and women in general.

Jennifer Jill Araya's french was wonderful to listen to. She voice lends itself to the innocence of the characters in this story. I very much enjoyed this production and would listen to more of her work.

I was given a free copy of this audiobook upon my request. My review is unbiased and voluntary written.

Good listen

Story with many twists. Characters with depth, you can "see" the story. Cannot wait for more books from the same author.

Excellent story, fabulous narration!

This book is that rare combination of history and fiction that can be so difficult to pull off. So much has been written about the French Revolution it can be difficult to get something that ends up not sounding trite or contrived. The story manages to create a wonderfully relatable story without sensationalizing the grave and famous historical context it takes place in.

Jennifer's narration is so engaging, so vivid I found myself unable to stop listening. I'm a student of history and of languages and she manages the French with class and aplomb. If this story ends up birthing a sequel them I would want no one else to voice Ruby Charpentier. Well done!
