About this listen

Two agents, Russian and American, are brutally murdered. College students, working as drug mules, die gruesome deaths from radiation poisoning. Powerful dirty bombs explode minutes apart in San Francisco and St. Petersburg, Russia - slaughtering citizens and spreading blind panic throughout the world. But this is only a warning. The next attack will be nuclear.

Enter Air Force OSI agent Jericho Quinn and his crack team of specialists. Their mission: track down the black-market arms dealer who masterminded the plot - with a Soviet-era, suitcase-sized bomb - and dismantle them both. When the trail leads to South America, Quinn has to join the famous Dakar Rally, a 6,000-mile motorcycle run that’s about to become the most dangerous race in history. It’s not the finish line they’re racing for. It’s the fate of the world....

Labored thru narration

Women's voices were so quiet I couldn't hear them while driving in my car. I had to go back several times because the reader lost me in his almost monotone.

Audio Editor Begs Your Acquaintance

What did you like best about State of Emergency? What did you like least?

The story is rich and full of interesting characters but every time you become engaged in the story the narrator screams, screeches or whispers you back to reality and the volume control. Too much effort to listen to this audio book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tribadoe has some funny lines and is a memorable character. I rather like Anastasia as well.Clearly, Valentine is the most interesting psycho but Luke's use of volume for pitch really took away all the richness that Cameron put into the book.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Luke Daniels?

No preference on substitute, but a southern/midwestern primary accent may help the book. To Luke's defense I think this audio is begging for the acquaintance of a Volume Normalization filter. The whispers are incomprehensible and the attempt to change pitch via volume is not what Luke needs to do here for Valentine.

Could you see State of Emergency being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

This would be a good movie. It has some really interesting action. As to who would star....new talent to introduce some new faces is a good idea. Antonia Banderas might be very interesting as a bad guy like Valentine. Would be interesting to see what he could do with the part.

Any additional comments?

The combo of this story, which was very good, with the narrative approach taken with the characters reduce the enjoyment of this. I really liked the story...but would want to delivered with better audio editing. This can probably be salvaged with a good audio engineer that can normalize the volume and add some reverb and tone shift to Valentine's parts. With a volume bump on the whispers this audio can work.

Great Story, not so good narration

I love J Quinn, I love the bikes, the race the story is awesome so many moving pieces. But the narration is sometimes confusing. Seems he had a problem with female, ethnic voices. sometimes hard to follow or sounding the same as other characters but overall good story

Decent entry to the series

The story was good, but I wasn't able to enjoy it as much as I'd hoped to. The listening experience was incredibly frustrating. Sometimes the narrator whispers so low I had to crank the volume up and rewind in order to hear what was said. Other times he threatened to blow my ears out. This definitely took away from the overall experience, and I found myself wanting to finish the book, just to get it over with.

The antagonist's voice is worse than Snookies

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Whoever is the back up voice of the antagonist and other characters should have battery acid poured down their throat. I have never heard something so horrific that it makes me pull my headphones out. I want to hear this story but I just can't suffer through this horrifyingly annoying voice.

Was this Marc Cameron

This was not one of his better books. The narrator voice was unbelievable in one of the main characters. But regardless I was wondering if this was an abridged edition it was very choppy and at times hard to follow from one scene to the next. Not at all up to the standards I would expect from Cameron.

State of emergency

Overall the book was very good, but when the reader dropped his voice you couldn’t always hear him. You had the choice of so loud it hurt for the regular voices and hear the soft or be comfortable and miss the soft

Good story fun and exciting

Narrators voice is too soft when performing female voices. That part of the recording could’ve been better

Comic Book-esc

I hope Marc had no illusions that this story line and characters were to be real; they come across more super-hero like a comic book. The story is a good ride; you know the good guys will prevail. Some of the book feels a bit cliché but it was fun. The narrator had a real hard time doing female voices and his solution was to make them soft, but then you couldn’t hear them at the same volume for the rest of the book. Very very frustrating. I had to replay the female voice sections at a louder volume just to hear what was said. Hence the one star for performance - it happened too often to ignore.
