About this listen

After serving time for armed robbery, Ernest "Stick" Stickley is back on the outside and trying to stay legit. But it's tough staying straight in a crooked town - and Miami is a pirate's paradise, where investment fat cats and lowlife drug dealers hold hands and dance. And when a crazed player chooses Stick at random to die for another man's sins, the struggling ex-con is left with no choice but to dive right back into the game. Besides, Stick knows a good thing when he sees it - and a golden opportunity to run a very profitable sweet revenge scam seems much too tasty to pass up.

Classic Elmore Leonard with fantastic narration.

Where does Stick rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

Right up at the top of all my Audible experiences.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Stick?

When he took the Rolls Royce to visit his daughter.

Have you listened to any of Frank Muller???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I know that I've heard Frank Muller before but this time it was memorable. His command of accents, syntax and nuance are just unbeatable.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Oh, the laughs just kept coming.

Any additional comments?

I was extremely sad when it ended.

Quick Fun Read

Leonard rarely disappoints with his mix of weird characters and fun plots. I am now an age where I can reread the books I read years ago and it’s like reading them for the first time.

Great story

One of Leonard’s best. Frank Mueller does it perfectly. This story is the follow-on to “Swag” and Ernest “Stick” Stickley’s adventures.

Fun, short story.

Fun, short story. Good narration for the multiple characters. Would listen to similar work by the author and narrator

Just as funny this time around

I read this novel years ago and, as it turned out, I remembered a lot of it. Even so, certain passages made me burst into laughter. The reader is very very good most of the time, though I don't get his voices for Chuckie and Moke. I think he was trying to do the human equivalent of mean yappy little dogs, but I found the high-pitched whiny business annoying. Still, such a fine funny book.

Classic Elmore Leonard

Great characters, as always. A bit light in the story. Amazing performance. You'll spend a fair bit of time casting the movie in your head, but you won't miss anything.

Highly Entertaining

As almost always with Leonard, the writing is smart, spare, and engaging, with a likable hero up against some scary dudes. The narrator (Frank Muller) was the best ever. His death was a loss to this art form.

1) Swag 2) Stick - I wish someone had told me...

Stick is a sequel to Swag (or Swag is the prequel to Stick?) Regardless, in the timeline it’s Swag then Stick. It’s not crucial you read them in order, they hold up independently, but you will understand who and what the characters are talking about in Stick much better if you read Swag first. That said, they both ROCK! I love this book! Frank Mueller hits all the right notes when he performs Elmore Leonard. Black comedy mixed with criminal violence with just a dollop of misogyny and racism on the side. (The characters, not the writer)
