Publisher's summary

"Stickeen.... pushed his head past my shoulders, looked down and across, then looked me in the face and began to mutter and whine; saying as plainly as if speaking with words, "Surely, you are not going into that awful place. "As the darkness of a freezing night approaches, an experienced American naturalist and a dog are trapped on an Alaskan Glacier. This is a true story, written by one of the United States' most famous naturalists and explorers.

Loved It! Just loved it!

Cant say more. First book I have given 5 stars to from audible. I like the narrator who made me feel as though he were in John Muirs footsteps himself and as though he himself were awed by his furry friend. You can tell he like reading this book - it surely came through. John Muir is of course, so poetic and makes you feel as though you are along on the journey with him. He gives so much spirit and makes you dig inside Stickeens little furry soul. I cherished the analogy between the dogs loyalty and love for him to his spirituality with God. Great book.

I immediately hugged my dog upon finishing.

Adventure, bravery, companionship, admiration, and a feeling of love for all our mortal friends. What a beautiful story and so well read.

Mirrored Soul

What made the experience of listening to Stickeen the most enjoyable?

The narration was light and smooth earthy in tone like the Author.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The Wilderness. It is so, because the vast wild is ever changing and had always been the challenge for Muir and his companions; not to conquer it but to be one within it.

What about Andre Stojka’s performance did you like?

He is a masterful story teller he had a good tempo and inflection in his reading.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Their were several. Muir describes the views with such depth of feeling you see what he saw rise up before you. It transforms you to a place next to him in his journey. It is a true gift.

As a dog lover

As a dog lover this was a masterful book. I’ve taken long adventures, and sometimes dangerous moments with my dog and this captured it. Loved it, would give it 10 stars if I could.

Good introduction to John Muir

Conservationist storyteller Muir recounts a brush with death in the cold wilds with a small, black dog, whose appearance belies a strong will and great fortitude.

Adventure for all ages..

I bought this book while visiting John Muir house in Martinez California.
I wanted to have a book that my grandson and I could read together before going to sleep when he visited me.
I got the audio so that I could listen to the book before we started reading it to see if it was appropriate for his age..(6)
what a wonderful adventure in words.. .

Well read and an amazing story

You will understand Alaska and the mind of a dog in a different way from listening to John Muir.

Great story!

Would you listen to Stickeen again? Why?

I listened to this story twice the day I downloaded it.

Any additional comments?

This was a great story by John Muir, and the narrator did great job bringing me as a listener right into the middle of it all.

Stickeen - the story of John Muir and a dog

Whom so ever chose this weak 'READER' , Andre Stojka, with his frail, sing-song, unmanly pathetic wormy little voice to bring this wonderful dog story and Muir to life, should be fired. Allow John Lee (White Fang) to redo Stickeen. This experience took John Muir 20 years to finally be able to write about his hair-raising adventure he had on a glacier with this brave and loyal little dog. Stickeen was the dog of Rev. Samuel Hall Young's wife who was my great-grandmother's sister. Both my great-grandmother and my grandmother, the niece of Hall Young, spent many years in Alaska in the 1880s. My great-grandmother spent four years there in on a civil service teaching assignment. 20 years later, my grandmother spent two years in the late 1890s also teaching.

This is a great dog story - maybe the first great American dog story and your reader, but Andre Stojka, slaughtered it.
