Publisher's summary

An ancient machine holds the secrets of a distant world’s past for two intimate strangers in the latest romantic fantasy adventure by Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg.

Pell is an engineer and digger by trade—unearthing and repairing the fascinating artifacts left behind by the mysterious Ancients who once inhabited the sunbaked planet of Tampere. She’ll do anything to help the people of her village survive and to better understand the secrets of what came before.

Heartwood and Moseus are keepers of a forbidding tower near the village of Emgarden. Inside are the remnants of complex machines the likes of which Pell has never seen. Considering her affinity for Ancient tech, the keepers know Pell is their only hope of putting the pieces of these metal puzzles together and getting them running. The tower’s other riddle is Heartwood himself. He is an enigma, distant yet protective, to whom Pell is inexplicably drawn.

Pell’s restoration of this broken behemoth soon brings disturbing visions—and the discovery that her relationship to it could finally reveal the origins of the tower's strange keepers and the unfathomable reason the truth has been hidden from her.

Such a crazy mixed up story!

It was easy to get confused a couple of times but I trusted Charlie to give me a great story and she didn't disappoint. The romance was sweet and the ending satisfying 😌

Twists and Turns!

I'm a huge fan of Charlie N. Holmberg, and this latest book is absolute perfection! I was enthralled in her world of Tampeir and with the MC Pell. I loved every minute of this book and listening to it was even better!!

Me: On board with story/plot -> later Slightly confused -> ending, somewhat in acceptance?

I love Charlie N. Holmberg’s books. I have read over 5 of her books I believe at this point and i’ve always rated them all 5 stars. However, this one, I would rate somewhere around 4.25-4.5/5 stars. Although I thoroughly enjoy her writing style and the story was very interesting, I felt as though towards the end, there was some fluff in detail about some things (no spoilers) that left me just a little bit confused and overwhelmed but then the story got back on track and then the ending seemed a bit “Alright, well. It’s done now I suppose”. Now, on to another one of her books! :)

Incredibly Storytelling

I couldn't put this book down. Mystery, action, & a sprinkle of romance - no to mention world building at its finest.

Beautiful story

Loved the love story, loved that everyone is so much more mature in this book, and really loved the plot. I got a little bored when they went on and on about how the machine works and every little gear, but outside of that I loved the story. I realize that some people will really love that addition, but just wasn’t my cup of tea.

I need more!

I was captivated from the beginning. My preferences usually tend more toward fantasy than sci-fi but the world-building and evocative imagery as well as the sympathetic characters drew me in and held me captive. Some have said the narrative is bewildering and hard to follow, but I actually liked that. I felt that we were right there with Pel, sifting through for the truth.

I feel like there is so much room for continuing the story and the battle. Though I have not researched if this is intended to be a series, I sincerely hope it is!

Lacking

The whole premise of the book is lacking and the author heavily relies on telling rather than showing. The world is supposed to be a barren place with no trees or animals and non stop sun but there is constant mentions of things in our world today without an explanation of how they would know of this. Things like cats, lightbulbs, and don’t even get me started on all the mechanics.
