About this listen
In this magical tale of self-discovery from New York Times bestselling author Carrie Vaughn, a young widow taps into the power that will change the world—if the man’s world she lives in doesn’t destroy her and her newfound friends first.
In the summer of 1880, the death of Beth Stanley’s husband puts her life’s work in jeopardy. The magic of Arcane Taxonomy dictates that every natural thing in the world, from weather to animals, can be labeled, and doing so grants the practitioner some of that subject’s unique power. But only men are permitted to train in this philosophy. Losing her husband means that Beth loses the name they put on her work—and any influence she might have wielded.
Brandon West and Anton Torrance are campaigning for their expedition to the South Pole, a mission that some believe could make a taxonomist all-powerful by tapping into the earth’s magnetic forces. Their late friend Harry Stanley’s knowledge and connections would have been instrumental, but when they attempt to take custody of his work, they find that it was never his at all.
Tied together by this secret and its implications, Beth, Bran, and Anton must find a way for Beth to use her talent for the good of the world, before she’s discovered by those who would lay claim to her rare potential—and her very freedom.

Story
The next step in Ellie Baker’s marriage: divorce. She and her husband, Jonah, are heading to Florida to break it to the family. No great drama to share. After twenty years of marriage, they’ve just fallen out of love. Simple. Not to their college-age daughter, Maggie, who is devastated. Or to Ellie’s father, Frank, who grows as cold as a retiree can get in Orlando. As for Ellie’s mother, Bunny: no, no, no. She doesn’t want to hear it. After a dreadful weekend, Ellie and Jonah return home to New Jersey with hearts and minds still set on a split.

Catalina de Cerrato is being raised by her widowed father, Don Alonso, in 1551 Guatemala, scarcely thirty years since the Spanish invasion. A ruling member of the oppressive Spanish hierarchy, Don Alonso holds sway over the newly relegated lower class of Indigenous communities. Fiercely independent, Catalina struggles to honor her father and her late mother, a Maya noblewoman to whom Catalina made a vow that only she can keep: preserve the lost sacred text of the Popol Vuh, the treasured and now forbidden history of the K’iche’ people.

Story
In the 1970s, a new wave of feminism was sweeping America. But in the boys’ club of banking and finance, women were still infantilized—no credit without a male cosigner, and their income was dismissed as unreliable. If bankers weren’t going to accommodate women, then women had to take control of their own futures. In 1978 in Denver, Colorado, the opening of the Women’s Bank changed everything.

Art student Jo Kozak and her fellow classmates and best friends, Caroline, Finch, Amrita, and Saz, are one another’s muses—so close they have their own language and so devoted to the craft that they’ll do anything to keep their inspiration alive. Even if it means naively resorting to the occult to unlock their creativity and to curse their esteemed, if notoriously creepy, professor. They soon learn the horrible price to be paid for such a transgressive ritual.

Sensible, practical Elinor Tregarth really did plan to be the model poor relation when she moved into Hathergill Hall. She certainly never meant to kidnap her awful cousin Penelope's pet dragon. She never expected to fall in love with the shameless—but surprisingly sweet—fortune hunter who came to court Penelope. And she never dreamed that she would have to enter into an outrageous magical charade to save her younger sisters' futures. However, even the most brilliant scholars of 1817 England still haven't ferreted out all the lurking secrets of rediscovered dragonkind.

Critic reviews
“Vaughn spins a moving tale about the hardships that women faced in the late 19th century, while also introducing an inventive magic system that hinges on the pursuit of knowledge. The result is an adept and provocative feminist fantasy.” —Publishers Weekly
“Vaughn’s historical fantasy captures both the science and the magic of the natural world, as well as 19th-century sexism. With a unique magic system and engrossing character arcs, this novel will speak to fantasy and lit fic readers alike.” —Library Journal (starred review)
“Vaughn's prose is captivating and the story begins slowly, almost meditatively, echoing Beth's own grief and solitude while building a compelling magical system…perfect for anyone who enjoyed the science and magic parts of the His Dark Materials series and longs for more.” —Booklist (starred review)

Story
Catalina de Cerrato is being raised by her widowed father, Don Alonso, in 1551 Guatemala, scarcely thirty years since the Spanish invasion. A ruling member of the oppressive Spanish hierarchy, Don Alonso holds sway over the newly relegated lower class of Indigenous communities. In a race to stop an ancient evil from destroying the worlds as they know them, Sunny comes to a startling, heartbreaking realization: if she chooses love—everything will burn. Sunny Cho aspires to be the dullest, least interesting person in any given room, which can be challenging for a nine-tailed fox spirit. So she drifts from city to city—staying clear of any and all attachment—and keeps her fox buried deep inside her. It is better this way. She would rather live as half of herself than risk losing control of her terrible powers.

Interesting Story, I Enjoyed
I liked this book very much. The story was interesting, characters likable, world building unique. I felt this story started a bit slow, but as soon as Beth followed Brandon and Anton the story picked up and became engaging and captivating. I was unable to put it down until the end. Narrator did a good job with telling this story but I thought her male voices were just ok. Overall this was a very enjoyable listening experience. This was a new to me author and i am looking forward to reading more of her books.

Surprisingly Steamy
Loved the story of an intelligent and determined woman facing the challenges of 1880s culture and the sprinkling of magic woven in- surprised it was so steamy in parts! Unexpected but it gave the story much more depth!

Would not have usually picked this up
I would not have usually picked this up, but for the excellent reviews in the 52BookClub Facebook Group. So well written and conceived that it was hard to remember it's not a true story and that "Arcane Taxonomy" was made up and fits the magical realism genre. Beth Stanley is perfect in this sort of Steampunk meets the 21st century tale of living life on one's own terms.

What a unique parallel world
I absolutely loved this book! It was so easy to suspend disbelief with the way Vaughn tangled myth and history. The love story is amazing- both the love between characters and the love of nature that pervades the entire book. This is one of those books that leaves me yearning for more of the character’s stories and more stories within the world created by the author. My imagination is taking me so many directions I wish I could read.

Historical details beautifully woven in
Picked up this title because I'm a fan of Vaughn's work overall and was delighted to discover this one includes my favorite historical topic: polar exploration. Characters are realistically drawn and struggle with the constraints of the era in a way that's poignant and relatable. (All the historical details ring perfectly true and the fantasy element is so unique, it's a wonderful pairing.) Really enjoyed this and am very happy to see it's first in a series.
