Publisher's summary

This Splash Read collection includes three historical fiction short stories about women in Utah history. The stories are:

  • "Martha Hughes Cannon: America’s First Female State Senator": On November 18, 1872, Susan B. Anthony is arrested in New York for illegally casting a vote in the presidential election. A young typesetter in Utah, Martha Hughes Cannon, is assigned to set each letter for the newspaper story breaking the news. Martha thrives in a tense situation to get the job done. Later, she goes on to study medicine and run for office as a state senator.
  • "Zina D.H. Young Delivers a Baby": Zina Young is a teenager in a new city in 1836. She struggles to make friends and find her place among the other teens. A local doctor offers to train new nurses and Zina responds with enthusiasm. Later, she uses her new skills to help a family in need.
  • "Minerva Teichert Paints a Masterpiece": A lover of art since childhood, Minerva Teichert dreams of attending the Chicago Art Institute. She works hard and saves her money until she is able to enroll. Once on campus, Minerva masters her skills and is able to make many significant contributions to the world.

While Splash Read stories are enjoyed by kids of all ages, they were written to facilitate a conversation between a child and parent or student and teacher. Each story introduces an influential person from history. Stories discuss life skills, challenges, problem-solving, and important issues. We’ve heard positive reviews from kids as young as first graders and as old as 10th graders.
