About this listen

Briar and Rosethorn are in ancient Chammur, where Briar gets involved in a war between street gangs at the same time that he ends up trying to train a young stone mage he has discovered. Intrigue, adventure, humor, nastiness, all set against a fascinating culture, this is classic Tamora Pierce.©2006 Tamora Pierce (P)2006 Full Cast Audio Fantasy Fiction Young Adult Witty

Editorial reviews

Briar Moss reluctantly adopts street urchin Evvy, who has a powerful gift with stones. Doing so puts him back in touch with the street life he has left behind. When Briar discovers he must not only protect Evvy but also teach her to control her magic, he's dismayed. This Full Cast Audio production manages Pierce's large cast of characters well, with especially believable performances for main characters like put-upon but good-natured Briar, distrustful Evvy, and short-tempered Rosethorn. (In fact, Evvy's irritable whine is so grating that it occasionally put this listener's teeth on edge.) Narrator Bruce Coville's pleasant delivery still manages to turn up the tension and highlight plot twists while illuminating the humor and wisdom of Pierce's vision.

Magic so fascinating that I wish it were real

The fight to save a poor street girl is the pivotal moment I found myself cheering for the hero who uses such unusual weapons.

I always like full cast audio

I was a little disappointed that it wasn't Tamora Pierce herself narrating this time, but Bruce Coville did a good job too, and the voice actors were great, as usual.

I love almost everything Tamora Pierce has written, both Tortall and Emelan, and enjoy their translation to full cast audio books.

Epic Adventure

I absolutely love Tamora Pierce! I've loved every book she has written to my knowledge. This story was a perfect continuation of the circle series.
