As I continued, I found more Biblical errors as the authors were suggesting things that each spouse should do to improve their marriage. Their recommendations are blatantly unscriptural and primarily psychological. The authors obviously want to appeal to the masses, perhaps with the idea of selling more books, but it simply grieves me when God’s word is twisted out of context.
God’s HOLY WORD makes it perfectly clear that only one spouse is needed to create a God-honoring marriage and that spouse is the spiritual leader, the husband (Ephesians 5). Using the comparison of Christ and the Church (Christ’s Bride), the church never needed to do anything to gain the sacrificial love of her GROOM.
The Church did not need to meet Christ halfway, alter any behavioral styles, or do anything special to make HIM feel emotionally safe enough to engage. No! Christ died while we were sinners.
If husbands will love their wives sacrificially like Christ loved the church and will willing give himself up for her, the wife, as a result, she will respect her husband.
Paul says it this way in Ephesians 5:32-33. Please note the words in parentheses are not in the original Greek transcripts. In addition the Greek word ‘hina’ translated as the word ‘that’ in the KJV means ‘as a result’ or ‘in order that’. Here’s the scripture:
32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife (see) that (she) reverence her husband.
When the passages are written without the translators added words (see and she) and with the benefit of understanding the Greek meaning of the word hina, the passage takes on a whole new meaning that will solve marriage problems. Here is the scripture without all the additional words:
32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife as a result, reverence her husband.
To drive the point home, Christ didn’t expect to be revered (or respected) before He gave Himself up for His Bride. No, He gave Himself up for us (His Bride) while he was being misunderstood, abused, and treated unmercifully.
I contend, and with scriptural evidence, that when any husband lays down his life for his wife like Christ did, she will respect, serve, love and adore him just like the Church honors Christ.
That’s why it only takes one spouse (the husband) to change the direction of a marriage. And it is ultimately the husband’d responsibility because God placed man in authority (or to be the head) of woman and God’s word clearly appoints the husband to love his wife like Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25).
I am praying that God’s Spirit will convict Biblical marriage counselors and authors to do more research before they counsel couples or write books like this.
Not Biblical!
