About this listen

Born and raised in idyllic Sullivan's Island, Susan Hayes navigated through her turbulent childhood with humor, spunk, and characteristic Southern sass. But years later, she is a conflicted woman with an unfaithful husband, a sometimes resentful teenage daughter, and a heart that aches with painful, poignant memories. And as Susan faces her uncertain future, she realizes that she must go back to her past. To the beachfront house where her sister welcomes her with open arms. To a place haunted by long-held secrets and devastating betrayals. To the only place she can truly call home.Public Domain (P)2006 Brilliance Audio, Inc. I loved the voice of the author. The performance was good, too. but it was the authenticity of the words the were chosen to paint the scenes for the listener were what captured me. Such a great ending.

I loved listening to this book again!

Pleasant enough that I want to listen to the next one in the series. Wonderful narrator who can also sing! Bonus points! Light summer reading with some interesting twists. Not unlike Susan in the book, I'm still working on figuring out her father... Update -- I had no idea the audio-book was ABRIDGED! Extremely disappointed to find that out. Minus one star for that.

Disappointed this was an ABRIDGED version

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

But still a nice story. It was easy listening and another good book by Dorothea Benton Frank. I am partial to books about the south, though!

A Little Predictable

It would have gotten all five stars if it had the entire chapters and not just a little bit here and there

Why It only gets 3 🌟

This was not my favorite of Frank's books. Tragedy and death are in too much of book.

Much tragedy and sadness in this book.

I liked the way the family embraced Livy. I didn’t like the descriptions of Susan’s father’s abuse.

The Gullah accents were fun to listen to.

Loved this book! Makes me want to visit Sullivan’s island, and the beach! It was inspirational!

As a person who occasionally visits Sullivan’s Island, it is nice to hear a story through the eyes of a local as opposed to a vacationer’s. Family dynamics are complicated, and DBF describes the joy and pain of this family well.

A Great Summer Read
