About this listen

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Hotel Nantucket: After tragedy strikes, Hollis Shaw gathers four friends from different stages in her life to spend an unforgettable weekend on Nantucket, by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Hotel Nantucket.

Hollis Shaw’s life seems picture-perfect. She’s the creator of the popular food blog Hungry with Hollis and is married to Matthew, a dreamy heart surgeon. But after she and Matthew get into a heated argument one snowy morning, he leaves for the airport and is killed in a car accident. The cracks in Hollis’s perfect life—her strained marriage and her complicated relationship with her daughter, Caroline—grow deeper.

So when Hollis hears about something called a “Five-Star Weekend”—one woman organizes a trip for her best friend from each phase of her life: her teenage years, her twenties, her thirties, and midlife—she decides to host her own Five-Star Weekend on Nantucket. But the weekend doesn’t turn out to be a joyful Hallmark movie.

The husband of Hollis’s childhood friend Tatum arranges for Hollis’s first love, Jack Finigan, to spend time with them, stirring up old feelings. Meanwhile, Tatum is forced to play nice with abrasive and elitist Dru-Ann, Hollis’s best friend from UNC Chapel Hill. Dru-Ann’s career as a prominent Chicago sports agent is on the line after her comments about a client’s mental health issues are misconstrued online. Brooke, Hollis’s friend from their thirties, has just discovered that her husband is having an inappropriate relationship with a woman at work. Again! And then there’s Gigi, a stranger to everyone (including Hollis) who reached out to Hollis through her blog. Gigi embodies an unusual grace and, as it hap- pens, has many secrets.

The Five-Star Weekend is a surprising and captivating story about friendship, love, and self-discovery set on Nantucket. It will be a weekend like no other.

Perfection

Native Nantucketer Hollis hasn’t spent much time on the island since she left for college. Now, in her fifties and with a lifestyle blog and internet show and a recent widow, she gathers her best friends from each phase of her life for a FIVE STAR WEEKEND to celebrate their friendship and each other not realizing each is battling her own crisis. Childhood BFF Tatum awaits results of her biopsy. Druanne (sp?), her college roommate, is about to be “cancelled” when a statement taken out of context goes viral. Insecure best friend from her mom days, Brooke contemplates leaving her sleazy husband after another sexual harassment lawsuit. Harboring the biggest secret, her online friend Gigi, a blog fan, is also mourning Hollis’s husband, her lover. Also on hand for the FIVE STAR WEEKEND is Hollis’s daughter Caroline fresh off a secret relationship with her coupled, older mentor.

FIVE STAR WEEKEND is Elin Hilderbrand’s penultimate summer novel, something I haven’t allowed myself to contemplate. Hilderbrand has been the start of summer for over two decades and I’ve preordered most of her novels. Each book is more polished than the previous.

FIVE STAR WEEKEND focuses on friendship, romances and forgiveness as Hollis and each of her friends have been imperfect toward each other, with Gigi’s offense the most egregious. Filled with Easter Eggs from previous novels, including Blonde Sharon, Hilderbrand’s faithful readers will love the cameos.

One need not be a perennial Hilderbrand fan to enjoy every page of FIVE STAR WEEKEND. It was so good I listened to the audiobook in one day and immediately relistened.

Wonderful listen

Another fabulous Elin Hilderbrand novel. The only negative is that now I'm finished listening and am ready for the next one! Loved the characters and everything about this book.

Did not disappoint

For the last few years, I have pre-purchased Elin‘s books (audio version) because I know that I will not be disappointed. This was no exception. Once I start listening, I just wanted to listen more until the story is over, and I sadly bid farewell to the characters that I’ve come to really enjoy. Super kudos to the narrator who did a wonderful job.

Another great book.

Elim Hilderbrand does it again! Great story line, good development of characters. Now I have to wait another year for her “last” book.

Five stars for Five Star Weekend

It was a wonderful read. It made me think of friends and all we endure in life. Yet life continues and we all evolve with it.

Loved it!

The concept of a weekend with five friends made throughout one’s life is simply genius. The humanity shown by the women in this book is real and honest.
