About this listen

Summer details the sexual awakening of Charity Royall, who lives unhappily with her hard-drinking adoptive father in an isolated New England village. Lucius Harney, a visiting architect, awakens her sexual passion and her hope for escape. Exploring Charity's relation to her father and her lover, Edith Wharton delves into dark cultural territory: repressed sexuality, small-town prejudice, and, in subtle hints, incest.Public Domain (P)2009 Alpha DVD LLC Classics

Wharton just can't let a woman have a good life

As a younger reader, I loved Wharton, so I thought I would revisit her again. Summer was okay. Nothing more. Nothing less. Not particularly original, either, but good enough to listen the whole way through. I can't really recommend purchasing the audio version. If you have to read it, go pick up a used copy at a book store or check it out for free from the library.

good reader

i suppose if you are a huge fan of edith wharton you should see what this book is about. for me it was as depressing as ethan frome, without even a tenth of the magic.

if you are looking for light romance, or even light literary romance, be warned. there is nothing light about this book.

the reader has quite a nice voice, in fact it has been a few weeks since i listened to this and can still hear her voice in my head.
