About this listen

From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of Orphan Train comes a novel about buried secrets and the redemptive power of forgiveness.

Cassie Simon is a struggling artist living in New York City. When she receives a call from a magistrate telling her she has inherited 60 acres of land in Sweetwater, Tennessee, from her grandfather, whom she never knew, she takes it as a sign: it's time for a change. She moves to the small Southern town where her mother, Ellen, grew up - and where she died tragically when Cassie was three.

From the moment she arrives in Sweetwater, Cassie is overwhelmed by the indelible mark her mother's memory left behind. As she delves into the thicket of mystery that surrounds her mother's death, Cassie begins to discover the desperate measures of which the human heart is capable.

I probably would have enjoyed the story much more if the person narrating "Cassy's" part was someone else. This person has a very strange affectation in her enunciation of words that is mechanical and depressing. It was so odd and distracting I found myself loosing track of the story line

Story ok. But.

I didn't think I would really like the book but as I went along from chapter to chapter it just got more interesting till I had reached the end.The subject matter is totally real and something that could be a true story.

beautiful story from beginning to end.

Plenty of twist and turns leading to suspense. Every family has secrets, and the Clyde family has many secrets from both family and outsiders.

I couldn’t make it past chapter 3 with this narrator. She exaggerates the end of her words like some sort of vocal embellishment. It made me sad, as I loved A Piece of the World (read) and listened to Orphan train which was decent. This story line bored me so far, but I may try to read it at some point because I can’t tolerate the narrators voice.

Narration ruined the story

I've not read anything by her prior to this. Seemed it would be engaging, interesting mystery set in bucolic, southern setting. Story was kind of thin, seemed to drag on, and was sort of depressing. Wasn't helped by Ms. Toren's monotone delivery.

Just, 'okay' for me

This book with a little bit small for me and I did not like in the area. Why can't

Ok nothing great

I was hesitant about this title because of the negative reviews about the narrators. I don’t think they were the best but I also don’t think they were as bad as described in some of the reviews. I actually thought the gratuitous sexual encounter narratives were totally unnecessary… Could’ve been dealt with in
a few brief paragraphs to give us the idea… And then friggin get on with the story. This is one of the authors earlier stories and I don’t recall encountering these kind of narratives except when it added to the story in the other books I’ve read.

Gratuitous sex scenes not needed.

The story seemed to lay everything open early, but then it added twists to keep you tied in.

interesting twist

I enjoyed this book. It’s not what I expected but definitely enjoyed it. Paints a picture of small town TN and the hidden secrets of family.

Enjoyable listen.
