About this listen

“Excellent.” (The Wall Street Journal)

Since its publication 10 years ago, businesspeople, investors, doctors, parents, students, athletes, and musicians at every level have adopted the maxims of Talent Is Overrated to get better at what they’re passionate about. Now this classic has been updated and revised with new research and takeaways to help anyone achieve even greater performance.

Why are certain people so incredibly great at what they do? Most of us think we know the answer - but we’re almost always wrong. That’s important, because if we’re wrong on this crucial question, then we have zero chance of getting significantly better at anything we care about.

Happily, the real source of great performance is no longer a mystery. Bringing together extensive scientific research, best-selling author Geoff Colvin shows where we go wrong and what actually makes world-class performers so remarkable. It isn’t specific, innate talent, nor is it plain old hard work. It’s a very specific type of work that anyone can do - but most people don’t.

What’s more, the principles of great performance apply to virtually any activity that matters to you. Readers and listeners worldwide have been inspired by this book’s liberating message: You don’t need a one-in-a-million natural gift. Better performance, and maybe even world-class performance, is closer than you think.

Colvin is down right truthful and pulls no punches. This is the most useful book I’ve ever read for anyone who wishes to be truly great at what they do.

5 interesting points..

interesting to me..
1. deliberate practice is priority
2. instant (or ASAP) feedback of practice hones skills best
3. creativity happens when not using the same system or routine
4. the myelin sheath can grow/regrow with constant consistant practice
5. plasticity doesn't end with old age

A new look at human success/ accomplishment

Study based, fact based. Examples of great musicians, scientists, business people and the myth of talent. A must for musicians to read. A must for PARENTS to read.
I listened to this almost straight for 2 days. Could not stop. And then bought the paperback. Age is no limitation to doing better. I’m going to strengthen that brain myelin! And now, understand how to help my grandchildren.
Stunned. It’s not another self help book at all. Yikes.

Go practice.

I highly recommend this book to other musicians and to all my students. The concepts in this book can be applied too many different walks of life. Musicians, Athletes, Artist, Parents, Craftsmanship, Entrepreneurs, Cooks, and just about anyone that strives to be better at anything in life.
I am living proof that deliberate practice can be rewarding. I was recently awarded a scholarship due to my performance during my piano audition. I am not someone that had lessons in childhood, or was blessed to study music in school. I started my studies later in life through a community college. I forced daily deliberate practice while journaling every moment of my practice, and the rewards are fruitful. I now give private lessons and now have opportunities to attend Universities that I otherwise would not have been able to afford.

Listen to this book during you book time, and then GO PRACTICE!
