About this listen
Ted Leitner: Controversial, outrageous, and hilarious, Ted Leitner has been the enduring voice of San Diego’s sports scene since 1978. In Ted Talks, “Uncle Teddy” talks his way through his peripatetic career and often-chaotic family life, stories told with uproarious humor and heartfelt memories. Along the way, he pays lasting tribute to his dear departed friends - longtime broadcast partner Jerry Coleman, the Padres’ Tony Gwynn, and the Chargers’ Junior Seau.
Ted Talks includes “Voices", a collection of first-person anecdotes from athletes, coaches, and media personalities who’ve known him, worked alongside him, and truly cherish what he’s meant to San Diego over his clamorous four-decade career that’s been like no other. By turns introspective, surprising and revealing, Ted Talks tells Uncle Teddy’s story - and there are plenty of stories to be told.
Ted Leitner spent 41 seasons as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Padres and 25 years as the radio voice of football and basketball for the San Diego State University Aztecs, which continues into 2021-2022. Following the pandemic-shortened baseball season of 2020, Leitner retired from the broadcast booth and was appointed Ambassador of the San Diego Padres by team owner and chairman Peter Seidler. During his on-air career, Leitner also spent 25 years (1978-2002) as sports anchor and commentator on CBS 8, and as a talk-show host and sports humorist on KFMB-AM Radio.
In addition to the Padres and Aztecs, his play-by-play credits include the NFL's San Diego Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles, the NBA's San Diego Clippers, as well as the University of Oklahoma and the University of Connecticut. Prior to coming to San Diego in 1978, Leitner was a TV sports personality in Oklahoma City, Hartford, and Philadelphia.

Story
Shattered is part sports audio book, because you’ll go on road trips, enter clubhouses, and walk on the fields of professional baseball. It’s part romantic novel, because you’ll journey with two young kids who fall in love and eventually elope, evading not only her family, but the law as well - for she was only 16. It’s also a story of brokenness, betrayal, and burn-out. If you were raised in a dysfunctional family, if you’ve ever had your dreams fall apart, been betrayed by close friends, or hit the psychological “wall” in your professional career, this is your audio book too.

Williams was the best hitter in baseball history. His batting average of .406 in 1941 has not been topped since, and no player who has hit more than 500 home runs has a higher career batting average. Those totals would have been even higher if Williams had not left baseball for nearly five years in the prime of his career to serve as a Marine pilot in WWII and Korea.

Ingenious attempts at cheating. And surprisingly uplifting stories that remind us why we play these games in the first place.

Story
In Golden Days, acclaimed sports journalist Jack McCallum uses these two teams - the Jerry West/Wilt Chamberlain/Elgin Baylor Lakers and the Stephen Curry/Kevin Durant/Draymond Green Warriors - to trace the dynamic history of the National Basketball Association, which for much of the last half century has marched memorably through the state of California. Tying together the two strands of McCallum's story is Hall of Famer West, the ferociously competitive Laker guard who later became one of the key architects of the Warriors.

Story
Mike Piazza was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 62nd round of the 1988 baseball draft as a "courtesy pick". The Dodgers never expected him to play for them - or anyone else. Mike had other ideas. Overcoming his detractors, he became the National League Rookie of the Year in 1993, broke the record for season batting average by a catcher, holds the record for career home runs at his position, and was selected as an All Star 12 times. Mike was groomed for baseball success by his ambitious, self-made father in Pennsylvania, a classic father-son American-dream story.

Story
Pete Rose played baseball with a singular and headfirst abandon that endeared him to fans and peers, even as it riled others--a figure at once magnetic, beloved and polarizing. Rose has more base hits than anyone in history, yet he is not in the Hall of Fame. Twenty-five years ago he was banished from baseball for gambling, then ruled ineligible for Cooperstown; today, the question "Does Pete Rose belong in the Hall of Fame?" has evolved into perhaps the most provocative in sports, a layered, slippery and ever-relevant moral conundrum.

Story
Best-selling sportswriter Jeff Pearlman draws from almost 300 interviews to take the first full measure of the Lakers’ epic Showtime era. A dazzling account of one of America’s greatest sports sagas, Showtime is packed with indelible characters, vicious rivalries, and jaw-dropping, behind-the-scenes stories of the players’ decadent Hollywood lifestyles. From the Showtime era’s remarkable rise to its tragic end - marked by Magic Johnson’s 1991 announcement that he had contracted HIV - Showtime is a gripping narrative of sports, celebrity, and 1980s-style excess.

San Diego's Sports Personality Has Lots To Say
Ted is a great storyteller. Knowing that, I waited for the Audible version with his voice and wasn't disappointed.
The chapters are short and our narrator keeps it moving, as does the principle writer the talented John Freeman. We learn about Ted's rocky upbringing and loving mother. We get lots and lots of Jerry Coleman stories and first hand accounts of Ted's interactions with the local athletes who have come and gone in the last 30 years.
There's some regrets about family and not always being the nicest colleague, and a fun tale of his move from Philly to San Diego and some of the veering from sports that is part of his makeup. Ted isn't shy about crediting those responsible for his success.
What we don't get is anything much about his wives - that's fine, but it's been part of his schtick - his thoughts on the litany of Padres ownership and, most disappointing, very, very little on the behind the scenes at News 8 during days of complete station domination. Ted left the station seemingly abruptly, eschewing the week long parade of highlight, congratulations and reminiscing that would have been widely enjoyed by his fans - including me.
All that said, it again is a really fun, entertaining and sports informative listen. With the fractured nature of sports reporting today, we may never see his likes again. So glad I bought it from Audible and listened.
Thank you, Ted. Thank you.
