About this listen

An eye-opening report from an award-winning author and former New York Times reporter reveals the link between teenage marijuana use and mental illness, and a hidden epidemic of violence caused by the drug - facts the media has ignored as the US rushes to legalize cannabis.

Recreational marijuana is now legal in nine states. Almost all Americans believe the drug should be legal for medical use. Advocates argue cannabis can help everyone from veterans to cancer sufferers. But legalization has been built on myths - that marijuana arrests fill prisons; that most doctors want to use cannabis as medicine; that it can somehow stem the opiate epidemic; that it is not just harmless but beneficial for mental health. In this meticulously reported audiobook, Alex Berenson, a former New York Times reporter, explodes those myths:

  • Almost no one is in prison for marijuana;
  • A tiny fraction of doctors write most authorizations for medical marijuana, mostly for people who have already used;
  • Marijuana use is linked to opiate and cocaine use. Since 2008, the US and Canada have seen soaring marijuana use and an opiate epidemic. Britain has falling marijuana use and no epidemic;
  • Most of all, THC - the chemical in marijuana responsible for the drug’s high - can cause psychotic episodes. After decades of studies, scientists no longer seriously debate if marijuana causes psychosis.

Psychosis brings violence, and cannabis-linked violence is spreading. In the four states that first legalized, murders have risen 25 percent since legalization, even more than the recent national increase. In Uruguay, which allowed retail sales in July 2017, murders have soared this year.

Berenson’s reporting ranges from the London institute that is home to the scientists who helped prove the cannabis-psychosis link to the Colorado prison where a man now serves a 30-year sentence after eating a THC-laced candy bar and killing his wife. He sticks to the facts, and they are devastating.

With the US already gripped by one drug epidemic, this audiobook will make listeners reconsider if marijuana use is worth the risk.

I learned a lot!

I learned a lot from this book. The author makes an overwhelming case about the dangers of marijuana, especially related to schizophrenia. I knew marijuana had a lot of negative side affects, but I had no idea those side affects include violent psychosis. I highly recommend this book, because I think it's important that people be educated on the subject by someone other than the marijuana lobby that's trying to get rich off it. We need to know the true risks and this book highlights some of them.

Awakening the truth

This book is full of amazing facts and studies. The book does not talk down to marijuana users or try to push a certain opinion, it gives you the facts so that you can make your own opinion.
I personally have seen some of these bad side effects of marijuana, so I believe it is important that everyone read or listen to this book, please hear both sides of the story, before you make your decision to take marijuana.

Mighty contradiction to what the media is selling

This book is a well written research supporting what us reformed dope smokers always suspected and now know. His data provides both quantifiable justification to my argument against pot use with my kids, but gives me places to "Google" when they dont believe me.

The Truth about Marijuana

Great, informative book, I struggled when he was sharing the killings of innocent family members and the perpetrators being declared innocent by insanity. This should be required reading in all health classes in High Schools.

100% right on

This rings so true from a family member in my family who was wondrrful, smart, kind, my best friend and big brother until engaging in marijuana only the summer of his 8th grade year. Life became hell for us all from then up until even now. He stopped smoking marijuana about his sophomore year of high school but too late, the damage was done. I forgive him for all the hell he caused our family as my poor brother went from intelligent and kind to a monster he couldn't control and that monster has ruined his life and I feel bad for him. He has had a horrible life. So much promise...unseen dreams.

Armed with Facts

Berenson makes it so obvious that the pot industry is lying about the safety of marijuana. Now that I know the facts about the studies, it is so easy to see through the industry's lies. He doesn't really talk a lot about the industry. He mainly sticks with talking about the studies. But after hearing the studies, I know how big of liars the industry is.
