About this listen
The Temptations were named the "#1 R&B/Hip Hop Artists of All Time" by Billboard Magazine in 2017. They are one of the most iconic, best-selling brands in the entertainment world today, and their journey is one of the most extraordinary stories of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The Temptations' heritage, influence, and contributions to American culture and the global music landscape is undeniable. The group produced some of the greatest music of our era and it transcends generations. Through the years, the group's trademark razor-sharp choreography, finely tuned harmonies, and compelling vocals made them the exemplars of the Motown sound. Their story is one of courage, struggle, triumphs, setbacks, and ultimately, international superstardom.
As told by its founder, this is the frank, revealing story of the legendary supergroup, that is the source of the Emmy-winning television miniseries Temptations and the smash hit Broadway musical Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations, which won the 2019 Tony Award for Best Choreography.

Ronnie Spector’s first collaboration with producer Phil Spector, “Be My Baby,” stunned the world and shot girl group the Ronettes to stardom. No one could sing as clearly, as emotively as Ronnie. But her voice was soon drowned out in Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound, and lost in Ronnie and Phil’s ensuing romance and marriage. Ronnie had to fight tooth and nail to wrest back control of her life, her music, and her legacy. And while she regained her footing, Ronnie found herself recording with Stevie Van Zandt, partying with David Bowie, and touring with Bruce Springsteen.

Aretha Franklin began life as the golden daughter of a progressive and promiscuous Baptist preacher. Raised without her mother, she was a gospel prodigy who gave birth to two sons in her teens and left them and her native Detroit for New York, where she struggled to find her true voice. It was not until 1967, when a white Jewish producer insisted she return to her gospel-soul roots, that fame and fortune finally came via "Respect" and a rapidfire string of hits.

Story
Fat Joe is a hip-hop legend, but this is not a tale of celebrity; it is the story of Joseph Cartagena, a kid who came of age in the South Bronx during its darkest years of drugs, violence, and abandonment, and how he navigated that traumatizing landscape until he found—through art, friendship, luck, and will—a rocky path to a different life. This memoir, written in Joe’s own intensely compelling voice, moves with the momentum of pulp fiction, but underneath the tragicomedy and riveting tales of the streets and the industry is a thought-provoking story about a generation of survivors.

I love the Temptations
I really enjoyed listening to this amazing memoir. I felt like I was there as I was listening. I grew up in Detroit; so I had actually grew up with David Ruffin nephew. His nephew Jimmy lived on the same street I lived on as a kid. Our family was so in love with the Temptations.

History in the making
What a wonderful edition to the magic of the Motown story. Growing up during this period and watching my youthful parents listening and dancing to the sound of young America, I now understand how this music could have help made their lives more bearable during this turbulent era in world history. This rendering is honest, open and heartfelt. Thanks big O

Great Book anot a great group.
loved it. I've been a fan of the Temptations since I was a kid. (im 56 now). I've read alot of tock and roll biographies. Rarely to get updates as well as the story told by someone who.lived it. this American music success story is read and written by a founding member. its filled with emotion and delivered warts and all.
