About this listen

"Tender Buttons" consists of multiple poems covering the everyday mundane, Stein's experimental use of language renders the poems unorthodox and their subjects unfamiliar. It is renowned for its Modernist approach to portraying the everyday object and has been lauded as a "masterpiece of verbal Cubism". Its first poem, "A Carafe, That Is a Blind Glass", is arguably its most famous, and is often cited as one of the quintessential works of Cubist literature.

It is lovely to hear this read aloud, and the narrator does a great job. She keeps the intonation lively, but lets the text speak for itself. The text goes by fast when it's read, so your own associations don't have a lot of time to emerge, but it is definitely a different way of becoming immersed in the words. It's just a different experience from reading. I recommend it.
