About this listen

There is hope in chaos. Immerse yourself in the humanity and jeopardy of saving animals in post-invasion Baghdad. As the desperation of tigers, lions, and a sun-roasted pelican inspired compassionate American soldiers, Iraqis, and conservationists to improvise audacious animal rescues, the city simmered, then boiled. The Accidental Invasion of Baghdad Zoo is not just a zoo story; it is a journey into the manic layers of modern Iraq.

The addictive energy of Baghdad comes to life through uplifting missions, tragedy, unshakable camaraderie, suicide bombings, unexpected comedy, Iraqi hospitality, and political adventurism. For a year, abandoned palace menageries, Green Zone politicking, raw violence, Saddam Hussein’s stolen Arabian horses, wounded bears, and checkpoint puppies spiraled the recovery into animal welfare theater.

Amazing audiobook makes you laugh and cry at the same time. Wonderful stories, anyone who worked in the Middle East for a while might relate to some of it! Loved it!

I loved this book, Brendan has a way with words that describes his surroundings in a way that shows a person intricately and passionately aware of his surrounds and the people that interact with him. From hilarious anecdotes, immense frustration and true humanity in difficult circumstances this is book outlines the bizarre events of war zone animal conservation incredibly well.

A amazing grass roots account of events in Baghdad
