About this listen

A rogue Russian nuke sails toward the harbors of Los Angeles in the hull of a ramshackle sailboat. Without destroying a single building, the bomb shatters the latticework of the American dream, toppling one piece of the economy after another. A group of Special Forces veterans and their prepper friends scramble for survival in a worldwide catastrophe so psychologically disruptive they are left questioning everything they ever believed to be true.

The first thing that occurred to me was that Ross and Kirkham know the technical side of of their story extremely well, and if you're a Clancy fan, that will speak to you. I tend to read for characters as well as information, and I think that that is where the authors found their sweet spot. It's dangerous to base a character off of oneself, as both do here, because of our tendency to want to embellish our best parts and gloss over our faults. Ross and Kirkham are not afraid to face their characters' weak spots. They have created a book full of believable, likable (and sometimes unlikable) humans, battling chaos, in a very realistic post-collapse America. I am again reminded of the line by fictional chaos theorist Ian Malcolm: "The kind of control you are attempting simply is... it's simply not possible." Maybe not, but its fascinating to watch it all unfold.

The voice performance is good, but I gave the performance only 4 out of 5 stars because, aesthetically, I prefer a different performance style.

I strongly recommend the book.

The characters kept me listening.

One of the best novels of this genre I have ever read. The authors paint a vivid, eye opening picture of what could so easily befall our all too fragile society. Also, as a former recon member, I really enjoyed the detail given to tactics and terminology. Brought back memories!
I can't wait for the next installment.

Outstanding!

I swear to the Almighty that I didn’t put two and two together that the authors are founders of BRC and Readyman. Very cool.

I think if anyone wants an idea, even closer than the ludicrous riots of 2020, Portland and the Gvm’t pounding of US Citizens during Covid- this book brings to light, for me anyway, just how close we are to this kind of Chaos. I mean we are three steps away and although fiction- this book struck home with me.

Pretty good performance, very good story. Must read. As a writer of mil/themed thrillers myself, I have to say that I’m now a big fan.

These guys are right up there with Carr and Thor, as far as I am concerned. Good job, boys.

Too close for comfort MUST READ

The story, while fictional, is predictive of what could happen in the event of one, single black swan event. Amazing work, men.

Fiction?

What an eye opener; And I’ve thought about this already. Still scared me; in a good way.

This book made driving the Semi tough for a few days (Kindle version), I'm glad that the audio book came out, sleep is easier to get now.
The narrator is pretty good, not Scott Brick, but not bad.

More than just another Prepper fiction book.

Being a veteran and meeting Jeff And Jason before it is a great privilege. Hope to meet them again and have the opportunity to train with them one day.

After the review from book 1 which is the entire first chapter with the text literally cut and pasted the remainder makes it a bit hard to justify the cost for a short audiobook. Book two doesn't pick up from book one, but rather introduces three more storylines, which are each different and interesting, but the characters from book one are not in this book and it is the same timeline as book one. That is spoiler alert, but just be aware. The most substancial improvement over book 1 is Kevin Pierce. Finally some who is a story teller. LANGUAGE ALERT! Maybe a Chrstian wrote this series, I don't know but the language and crudeness can be challenging to listen to. If book 3 has the same long recap and short new story I will stop the series because I don't think it is worth the money...I'll see

Should have been included in book one
