About this listen

This humorous and nostalgic novel takes the listener back to the carefree days of boyhood in Hannibal, Missouri, where Mark Twain grew up.

Just what did boys do in a small Midwestern town during the mid-1800s, a time when there were no televisions, no arcades, and no videos? They whitewashed fences, floated down rivers, traded marbles, formed secret societies, smoked pipes, and, on occasion, managed to attend their own funerals. Yes, they may have been a bit mischievous, but as Aunt Polly said of Tom when she believed him to be dead, "He was the best-hearted boy that ever was." Aunt Polly's sentiments reveal one of the cardinal tenets of Twain's philosophy: In this deceitful and infirm world, innocence can be found only in the heart of a boy.

A Classic

Mark Twain lives up to the story teller reputation that he has been given. The story moves along swiftly but you are given a chance to appreciate the characters and scenery he places them in.

The narrator did an alright job. His pacing was good and there was some variation in the characters...some. But I think I've grown used to multiple narrator productions and spoiled by some unbelievable voice talents so this may not be fair to Mr. Gardner. His work did not take away from the experience but I feel it just didn't add much. This was worth a credit and I feel you will believe so as well.

It's Good to be a Kid Again

Twain said that part of his mission in writing Tom Sawyer was to remind adults what they once were themselves. Score one for Samuel Clemens! The book's now an American classic, and I first encountered it as a kid. Revisiting it years later was a blast. It made me want to call the old gang up so we could become pirates and outlaws and treasure hunters all over again!

Listening to a performance like Grover Gardner's certainly doesn't hurt - he's got a classic voice that's great for reading and broadcasting. Very easy on the ears.

So many audio versions—I chose the right narrator

I had never read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn so I chose the Norman Rockwell Illustrated Box Set of the two and the Grover Gardner narration and his mastery of the unique vernacular seems to approximate that of Twain’s intent for St. Peterberg, Missouri. Tom Sawyer is a bit of an ass, but I liked the story just fine and it introduced me to his friend Huck Finn for whom I needed the introduction. See next I’ll be listening to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in preparation for Percival Everett’s James. I chose Johnny Heller’s narration for Huck Finn because Johnny is a mighty fine man, friend and reader. It is difficult with multiple choices for a reader when choosing an audiobook of such a widely cherished story and I seemed to have chosen well; lest I think so.
