About this listen
In this, the most maritime of Montalbano’s investigations, listeners will be struck by the change in the commissioner.
One night, Inspector Montalbano dreams of a stormy sea, which he knows represents unease and loss of control. The next day, a boat is found in the port of Vigàta and within it, the body of a disfigured corpse. The waterfront has also drawn in an 85-foot luxury boat passengered by 50 carefree souls and a somewhat shadowy crew. They will have to stay in Vigàta until the investigation is over: the man, it seems, was poisoned. However, right now, it is the yacht’s owner and sailors Montalbano is focused on.
Montalbano must navigate the murky waters of his relationship with Livia while trying to find which seafaring suspect is the real murderer.

Story
In this first novel, we are introduced to suave, handsome Tom Ripley: a young striver, newly arrived in the heady world of Manhattan in the 1950s. A product of a broken home, branded a "sissy" by his dismissive Aunt Dottie, Ripley becomes enamored of the moneyed world of his new friend, Dickie Greenleaf. This fondness turns obsessive when Ripley is sent to Italy to bring back his libertine pal, but he grows enraged by Dickie's ambivalent feelings for Marge, a charming American dilettante.

Carl Mørck used to be one of Denmark’s best homicide detectives. Then a hail of bullets destroyed the lives of two fellow cops, and Carl - who didn’t draw his weapon - blames himself. So a promotion is the last thing he expects. But Department Q is a department of one, and Carl’s got only a stack of cold cases for company. His colleagues snicker, but Carl may have the last laugh, because one file keeps nagging at him: A liberal politician vanished five years earlier and is presumed dead. But she isn’t dead...yet.

ín Chaparro is a retired detective still obsessed by the brutal, decades-old rape and murder of a young married woman in her own bedroom. While attempting to write a book about the case, he revisits the details of the investigation. As he reaches into the past, Chaparro also recalls the beginning of his long, unrequited love for Irene Hornos, then just an intern, now a respected judge. Set in the Buenos Aires of the 1970s, Sacheri’s tale reveals the underpinnings of Argentina’s Dirty War and takes on the question of justice - what it really means and in whose hands it belongs.

Story
In 2012, in Paris, the novelist Édouard Louis was raped and almost murdered by a man he had just met. This act of violence left Louis shattered; its aftermath made him a stranger to himself and sent him back to the past he had sworn to leave behind. A best seller in France, History of Violence is a short nonfiction account with the victim as its subject. Moving seamlessly between past and present, between Louis’s voice and the voice of an imagined narrator, History of Violence has the exactness of a police report and the unflinching curiosity of memoir at its best.

A dead man walks into a police station. He tells a tale - bizarre as it is grotesque - of kidnap and organ harvesting. John Baden's story of being held prisoner for 12 years sounds far-fetched - but it's all about to get much, much stranger. DI Ben Westphall has been given the case because of his background in MI6. He also has a knack for getting inside people's heads and seeing things others would miss. Westphall is no ordinary detective, and this is no ordinary case.

Lifetime friends become bitter enemies when the father of one family is killed by militants - one of whom is a son from the other family. Told in short sections highlighting a rich multiplicity of characters from all walks of life, Homeland brilliantly unfolds in nonlinear fashion as it traces the moral dilemmas faced by the families of murder victim and perpetrator alike. Aramburu alludes only obliquely to the historical context while he focuses on the psychological complexity of his characters and builds nearly unbearable suspense.

When a woman is beheaded in a park outside Rome and her six-year-old son goes missing, the police unit assigned to the case sees an easy solution: They arrest the woman's husband and await his confession. But the chief of Rome's major crimes unit doubts things are so simple. Secretly, he lures to the case two of Italy's top analytical minds: Deputy Captain Colomba Caselli, a fierce, warrior-like detective still reeling from having survived a bloody catastrophe, and Dante Torre, a man who spent his childhood trapped inside a concrete silo.

A Swedish army lieutenant drops dead on a shooting range in the desert. Was it an unfortunate accident - or something more nefarious? Ernst Grip, an agent of the Swedish security police, is sent to the Horn of Africa to find out. Once he’s on the ground, however, he quickly discovers he’s on his own. No one wants him snooping around - especially not the US Embassy’s CIA station. Which is no surprise, given that military transport planes are leaving from the base carrying untraceable pallets loaded with cash.

Good but has a glich
If you could sum up The Age of Doubt in three words, what would they be?
The familiar characters are at their best. However a side plot of M falling in love is not believable.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The main plot, involving a murder at sea, was as neatly woven as usual.
What about Grover Gardner’s performance did you like?
He is the perfect reader because he expresses all the familiar characters uniquely. Makes it even a better listen than a read.

Not quite up to par.
For me this book was not up the standard the past books of the series. For some reason Andrea has decided to make the inspector more adolescent in the affairs of the heart and in other ways that to me doesn’t make sense for a professional of his experience. It’s still a good book but not as good as so many of the previous.

Excellent!
I was disconcerted by his bemoaning his age. The all-too-personal aspects were probably more suited to a romance, or the familiar aspects of *midlife crisis* in the male, but that did not really diminish the enjoyment. It's always fun to try to anticipate the validity of the next clue or the more real identity of a new character. The recurrent members of the force continue to entertain even as they demonstrate personal growth. And Montalbano's ongoing skirmishes with whatever bureaucrat is plaguing him are always entertaining. I think that this tale had me smirking and guffawing even more that some of the others. No plot spoilers here. I do want to mention thanks to Stephen Sartarelli for a comfortable translation, and Grover Gardner for providing such excellent audio performances!

Another Wonderful Camilleri Book
I do not give 5 stars in any category except his books and the terrific performance (as always) by Grover Gardner. The humor is unbeatable, and the detective story is whipped cream on the top. I save Camilleri for times when I need a lift, and he never fails. You've got a treat in store, but go back to the first in the series and you'll see what I mean.

Salvo is becoming ridiculous.
Over the top emotions are becoming a bore! I wish the mystery was more at the forefront and the characters, not the lunacy of the Inspecter. It is losing its comedic value and is just silly. Almost slap stick. A shame,
