About this listen
Relive the revolution that gave birth to the United States as it stands today…
The word ‘Independence’ is, quite frankly, a very common word today – celebrated, venerated, and metaphorically worn as a badge by every citizen of a democracy, such as the United States. And it has a deep association with the word ‘Freedom.’ For any American today, these two form the basis of their fundamental rights – you were born with them, and you will die with them. But have you ever thought about the weight that these two words carry? Or the toll they left in their wake within the bloodied pages of the history of the United States?
In his famous Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln evoked the pillars on which the founding fathers established America: “…a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” This “new nation” was built by the toil, sweat, and blood of thousands of Americans… and the founding fathers had to play a vital role in this revolution.
Inside, you’ll discover:
- How the Seven Years’ War set the stage for the greatest revolution in American history
- Of Massacres and “Tea Parties” – how Boston became the hotbed of revolution and resistance against the British rule
- The 15 acts from the British parliament that formed a noose around the hardworking populace of the America
- Roots of a modern Congress – why the 13 colonies resorted to creating their own parliament (and how it laid the foundations of a future governing body)
- The key battles and sieges that formed a turning point and were crucial in shaping the course of the American Revolution
- Untold stories of 9 influential and revolutionary women and their contribution toward American Independence
- In the aftermath – explore the trials and triumphs of a new nation born in the aftermath of the American Revolution
And much more.

Story
In 1944, a secret Nazi experiment split the universe in two. In our universe, we won. Hitler died. Freedom prevailed. But in a parallel universe, the Nazis discovered the atom bomb first... and conquered the world. The light of freedom perished, and the Nazi shadow spread across Earth, the solar system, and the stars. In 2207, a portal opens between our two universes. One universe of freedom. One of tyranny. And through this portal flies the Weltraumwaffe, the space fleet of the Third Reich.

Story
The very strange but nevertheless true story of the dark underbelly of a 1960s hippie utopia. Laurel Canyon in the 1960s and early 1970s was a magical place where a dizzying array of musical artists congregated to create much of the music that provided the soundtrack to those turbulent times. But there was a dark side to that scene as well. Many didn't make it out alive, and many of those deaths remain shrouded in mystery to this day.

Story
Hilarious, fascinating, and a roller coaster of dizzying, historical what-ifs, Napoleon's Hemorrhoids is a potpourri for serious historians and casual history buffs. In one of Phil Mason's many revelations, you'll learn that Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they had to turn back as they were running out of fuel. You'll discover that before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon's painful hemorrhoids prevented him from mounting his horse to survey the battlefield.

Story
George Washington claimed that anyone who attempted to provide an accurate account of the war for independence would be accused of writing fiction. At the time, no one called it the “American Revolution”: Former colonists still regarded themselves as Virginians or Pennsylvanians, not Americans, while John Adams insisted that the British were the real revolutionaries, for attempting to impose radical change without their colonists’ consent. With The Cause, Ellis takes a fresh look at the events between 1773 and 1783.

Alan Taylor, two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, gives us a different creation story in this magisterial history of the nation's founding. Rising out of the continental rivalries of European empires and their native allies, Taylor's Revolution builds like a ground fire overspreading Britain's mainland colonies, fueled by local conditions, destructive, hard to quell.

On the first Sunday in December 1941, an armada of Japanese warplanes appeared suddenly over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and devastated the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Six months later, in a sea fight north of the tiny atoll of Midway, four Japanese aircraft carriers were sent into the abyss. Pacific Crucible tells the epic tale of these first searing months of the Pacific war, when the U.S. Navy shook off the worst defeat in American military history and seized the strategic initiative.

Best-selling author Eric Jay Dolin illustrates how American colonists at first supported these outrageous pirates in an early display of solidarity against the Crown, and then violently opposed them. Upending popular misconceptions and cartoonish stereotypes, Dolin provides this wholly original account of these seafaring outlaws.

This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

History made clear and engaging
Having struggled with history in school, this book brought the American Revolution to life for me. The author breaks down complex events like the Seven Years' War and Boston Tea Party into digestible pieces that actually make sense. I especially enjoyed learning about the nine influential women who contributed to independence - a perspective often missing from traditional history books. The story is enjoyable, and the tone of the narrator was easy to listen to.

A Riveting Journey Through the Birth of a Nation
The American Revolution provides an immersive look into the struggle for independence that shaped the United States, skillfully bringing to life the events, people, and ideals that drove the quest for liberty. This book offers a well-rounded account, covering both the well-known moments and the often-overlooked details of the Revolution, from the fervor of the Continental Congress to the hardships of the battlefield.
The narrative presents a balanced view, highlighting not only the triumphs but also the complexities and internal conflicts faced by revolutionaries and ordinary citizens alike.
