About this listen

Broken Money explores the history of money through the lens of technology. Politics can affect things temporarily and locally, but technology is what drives things forward globally and permanently.

The book's goal is for the listener to walk away with a deep understanding of money and monetary history, both in terms of theoretical foundations and in terms of practical implications. From shells to gold, from papyrus bills of exchange to central banks, and from the invention of the telegraph to the creation of Bitcoin, Lyn Alden walks the listener through the emergence of new technologies that have shaped what we use as money over the ages. And beyond that, Alden explores the concept of what money is at its very foundation to give the listener a framework to analyze and compare different types of monetary technologies and monetary theories.

The book also takes a distinctively human look at how money impacts the lives of real people, and how new monetary technologies shape the power structures within society.

Excellent book, amazing analysis of money past, present, and future.

Loved the book, the performer was good as well. I could have done without the inconsistent accents when reading quotes, but otherwise very solid.

Lyn is one of the great minds of our time and if you care at all about money, freedom, Bitcoin, or even, dare I say it, “crypto(currencies)”, then this is a must read.

One of the best histories of money and monetary theory

Phenomenal book on the history of money and monetary theory. I especially like how Lyn tied together the Theory of Commodity money and the Theory of money as a public ledger. It has shifted my thinking.

Incredibly cogent explanation of the history of money.

Lyn did a fantastic job of laying the groundwork for an historical explanation of money; the various schools of thought in and around it; and the lifecycle of currencies around the globe. Into this backdrop she provided an incredibly detailed and understandable explanation of Bitcoin and how it is created; regulated; promulgated; and how it addresses the shortfalls of global fiat currency systems. Highly recommend!!!

Great book terrible narrator

Very informative and well written but it’s ruined by an embarrassingly bad narrator. He adds an L to everything “caulse” “colst” “caughlt” etc… During the countless passages where he reads excerpts from other sources he uses ridiculous accents that gradually just turn back into his natural voice. It’s honestly unbelievable that someone thought this narrator was even remotely capable professional voice acting.
