Publisher's summary

Dear (almost) everyone: Can we be friends again?

Life is about to get complicated for Amelia Montgomery, a prominent litigator in Chicago. She’s been fired for not compromising her principles in a high-profile case and then punching her partner in the nose for the misogynistic comment he made in retort (not her finest moment). Leaving a career that gave her purpose, Amelia can only ask, What next?

Let it be better than her epic failure of a fortieth birthday party: an open bar full of no-shows except for John Ellis, a total stranger and the new associate at her ex-firm. As it turns out, though, he’s very good company - and a wake-up call. With the help of John and a lot of champagne, Amelia considers the people she’s wronged, from old besties to former boyfriends to coworkers. Amelia resolves to make amends - to those who really deserve it.

One apology at a time, Amelia’s looking at the choices she’s made in the past, the new ones she’s making with John, and those she’s making for herself. What next? Maybe a second chance she never expected.

Nice story, wrong character but excellent narration

Nice feel good message but the main character is not credible. A forty year old woman, a tough, seasoned lawyer on top of that yet behaves like someone half her age. If that can be overlooked somehow, book is still enjoyable thanks to an excellent narration.

Surprised Me.

I chose this book because of the title and the cover art. So, in this case, I did judge a book by its cover. I am glad I did. They story was entertaining and gave me some insight into an area for which I had lost hope. I cannot tell you more because I would spoil the story. Enjoy reading this book. I hope you even like it more than I did and you just might.

Underlying message is good, execution is juvenile

Yeah, that pretty well sums it up. A good message but very lame delivery, superficial and predictable. The 23 and Me / genetic subplot was unnessecary and self-serving. I can’t totally condemn the story because it does have a positive message, but it was just soooo predictable.

Can’t get over the ending

I was really enjoying the book until Amelia was actually challenged with her new growth and progress. Her treatment of John was unbelievable. She gave him absolutely no opportunity to come to terms with the morally difficult situation he found himself in. She completely and harshly abandoned him. In the end, she learned she completely misjudged him. But he still had to come graveling back to her??? I agree they should have ended up together, but to display her growth, Amelia should have realized her gross error, and been apologetic to John.

The narrator was pretty great except several of her “voices” of people in the 40s. She had them sounding more like their 70s.

Hang in there!

I almost stopped listening about halfway through. I looked and the reviews and decided to power through. The main character has some self-centered issues that make her unlikeable at times, but give her a chance to figure it out.

a great read

Not my usual type of book, but it sounded interesting. An apology list sounds like something I would've done. Almost from the start, I wanted to recommend this book to my friends.
