About this listen

Ruth’s beau died - simply because he was a slave.

She is determined to help other enslaved people as she assists with the Underground Railroad. She feels emotionally connected to him as they work together for a common cause. His presence is like a fresh splash of spring rain on her parched soul.

However, Joseph has plans. He’s determined to make some major changes in his life. He desperately wants to escape from his overbearing mother and leave the family business behind forever. As his mother tries to match him with beautiful Francine, an upper-class Black woman, he feels trapped and unhappy.

The virtual voice did amazingly well with the different types of speech in this story. I also appreciated the sincerity of faith that the main characters displayed. I think this story would be even better if it were expanded to include more details from the personal histories of the main characters and more development of the Underground Railroad work in Philadelphia.

A sweet American Cinderella Story

The narration of the story distracted from it quite a bit. I had trouble finishing it. I enjoyed the sweet story, but could hardly get past the audio.

Might be better read than listened to

AI reading delivered a lack of feeling with a mechanical sounding voice. The characters all sounded pretty much the same.

Monotone Reading

I liked the story could have been longer with more historical details . Disliked the virtual voice , at times it sounded very much like a computer with no human inflection .

Love Story

Nice short story. It was hard to follow sometimes as they were be at the church or bakery and then without a proper transition or changing chapters they would all of a sudden be at another place or doing something different. I don't know if that virtual voice issue or the author writing.

Good Short Story
