About this listen

Belle Palmer is finally free! Separated from her father on the harrowing escape, Belle is lost and alone until she finds shelter with the Bests, the first free family she's ever known. For the first time in her 16 years, Belle can speak her mind - except for her feelings for a certain dark-eyed young man - The Beau.

Educated and handsome, at 18, Daniel Best is engaged to the prettiest (if a little spoiled) girl around. So when the bedraggled girl his parents take under their wing suddenly turns into a vibrant, lovely young woman, his attraction to her is a complete - and complicated - surprise.

That the two belong together is undeniable, but caught between conscience and attraction, could it possibly happen?

Easy to love

The story of Belle is told so clear and vividly. The plight of slaves and Freeman was very apparent.

Par Excellence - Belle

The most memorable moment was the support given Belle by Daniel's mother. She.became a "surrogate" for Belle, something that used to be very common in southern black families.

A Heartbreaking Yet Beautiful Story of Love, Freedom, and Family

This book was both deeply moving and incredibly powerful. It masterfully blends historical facts with an emotional and beautifully written love story set in the post-Civil War era. The journey of free African-Americans, the Underground Railroad, and the growing pains for young people during this era.

What truly stood out was the contrast between life from the perspective of someone born into slavery versus someone who has always been free. The book opens your eyes to these different experiences, making the emotions feel raw and real. I felt like I was part of the family that found Belle, experiencing their joy, pain, and triumphs alongside them.

There were moments that made me reflect deeply—especially the significance of reading and learning, which played a powerful role in the story. This is a must-read for anyone who appreciates historical fiction that tugs at your heartstrings while educating and inspiring you.
