About this listen

My name is Jake Althaus, and for the most part, I seem to have it all. A loving partner, a devoted dog, a promising future in nursing school. The only problem is: I’ve been plagued with persistent headaches, and though I loathe to admit that anything is wrong, a routine checkup with my general practitioner, and the subsequent MRI that follows, delivers a devastating truth.

I have brain cancer.

It isn’t terminal, but that doesn’t change the dread that festers in my heart, in my spirit, in my brain. Surgery, followed by chemotherapy, is the only hope of a successful recovery. The only problem is: I’m scared out of my mind about what will happen next. I’ll lose my hair. My body. Possibly my sanity.

My life is only just beginning.

And now I fear it may possibly end.

We following Adrian and Jake through sickness and health.

The narrator Mickey Gousset has a light/easy voice when it’s about a heavy subject.

Kody Boye is a new author to me and I really enjoyed this book.

OMG, if you are looking for a tearjerker look no further.
Just remember to bring a massive industrial size Kleenex paper roll.

Narrator Mickey Gousset successfully brought this sad, very-very sad tale of beautiful people who magnetize heartache, pain and suffering and still find reasons to live, love and hope. The lovers faithfully, almost unbelievably are so good to each other,😭😭😭 the loyalty, support and trusting the love they have, propelled them through the toughest struggles I hope I never experience.

I do recommend this book for a long road trip.
Make sure you arrive at a happy place to balance the Chi and all that.

Happy Listening

I really enjoyed this story. All of the different plot lines in the story were really good.

I really liked the fact that Jake was in an established relationship, with Adrian, and having a supportive partner to go through the struggles with. Some of the stories with illnesses, like cancer, tend to have people meeting when in the middle of the throws of it, and less of having an established relationship.

Some people may question the huge age gap between Jake and Adrian, with Adrian being 38 and Jake being 20, but they seemed to have a good, stable relationship. I will admit though I was kind of nervous about Adrian being slightly bossy/ controlling at the beginning, but that faded when you really got to know the characters better and in the throw of Jakes illness.

I kind of wish that there was more talk about Jake’s HIV status related to the cancer, because I think that that was glossed over, and that’s nothing that should be glossed over.

Also, I’m really don’t think that Jake would be allowed to volunteer right away, even when the cancer treatments ended.

I did enjoy the ending scene with Jake and Adrian.

Overall, I would rate this 4 stars.
