About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Kimberla Lawson Roby has made a name for herself with such engaging novels as Casting the First Stone and Here and Now.

In The Best of Everything, Roby employs her trademark storytelling prowess to relate the tale of a woman whose life is complicated by the fact that her father is none other than Reverend Curtis Black.

Alicia Black Sullivan swore to never repeat her father's mistakes: she would never break any promises, she would never be unfaithful. And most important of all, when she got married, it would be for good. And she really does love Phillip, the assistant pastor of her father's church. She just happens to love money - and the things it can buy - as well.

Alicia was born to the good life, she's entitled to the best, and she'll do anything to get it. Even if it means piling up thousands of dollars in debt. Even if it means denying to everyone - even herself - that her love of shopping has gotten way out of control.

struggled to finish

Love the author! I didn't like this story as much as the others. The over all message was good. I will refer this series to my friends.

The Best of Everything

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would recommend this to a friend. It is one of a long series, but you need not read the others (the Rev. Curtis Black Series) to enjoy this story.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

For what it was, it was a good story. VERY dramatic and soap-opera-ish. You find yourself rolling your eyes and shaking your head throughout the story. But not in a necessarily bad way.

Which character – as performed by Caroline Clay – was your favorite?

Morality to the side. It would be Alicia. I wanted to slap her and ask her, "Girl, do you realize how good you have it? And you're messing it up!"

Who was the most memorable character of The Best of Everything and why?

Once again, Alicia. You just know by the end of this story, she didn't learn her lesson.

Any additional comments?

No, just that this is an quick, enjoyable read.

The Saga Continues

This story just keeps getting better. I love how Kimberla Lawson Roby is able to keep us engaged with these characters, book after book! The narrator does an awesome job with bringing each character to life. I can't wait to see what happens next with Alicia and I love how Curtis has truly changed.

The best of Kimberla Lawson Roby

I loved every page of this astute tale of a young, African-American shopaholic from the Chicago suburbs. It was fast-paced, engaging, and poignant. Being from Chicago, the local references added to my listening pleasure. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys melodrama and psychological realism. Rated A+

After book four in series it gets less interesting

The Reverend Curtis Black series had a good run. I think this series should've ended with the fourth book. Those four books had me listening from beginning to end. This one is interesting but not mind blowing.

Annoying character

I first thought Alicia was a bright girl but now, she got on my nerves. I was so upset with this character's immaturity and obsession with money and shopping and then cheating. Kimberla is a great writer who knows how to get her audience hooked on this Curtis Black series.
