Story
Growing up in a remote part of Alaska, Ivan and September Crane know that autumn is an unpredictable season - days of clear blue skies can give way to fierce, sudden storms in a blink. They know the trouble signs: changes in the wind, the temperature, or even the color of the dawn. But somehow, this time, left alone when their fisherman father is delayed at sea, even their keen sense of their surroundings and the lessons they've been taught fail them.

In 1954, 63-year-old Maine farmer Annie Wilkins embarked on an impossible journey. She had no money and no family, she had just lost her farm, and her doctor had given her only two years to live. But Annie wanted to see the Pacific Ocean before she died. She ignored her doctor’s advice to move into the county charity home. Instead, she bought a cast-off brown gelding named Tarzan, donned men’s dungarees, and headed south in mid-November, hoping to beat the snow.

Critic reviews
"Meeting his characters is like meeting people in a small town with real-life pleasures and problems. Junkyard owner Argus Winslow took 25 years to ask Ruby McClay for a date, and never understood the 'indelicacy' of bringing rabbit stew to an annual Easter egg hunt. Emmit Frank, city manager, succumbs to the beauty and natural pleasures (fishing) of Alaska...." ( School Library Journal)

Always good even the third time
I have all of these on cassette but when I saw them here I bought them again and listen on frequent flights. I hope Tom writes more stories someday. I would like them unabridged better.
