About this listen

By fate and fire, a being four millennia old is reborn in Mali in a short story of contemporary African life and ancient secrets by the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author of the Binti trilogy.

Issaka has returned home to Timbouctou and a devastating al-Qaeda raid. His only hope for survival is Faro, a stunning, blue-beaded supernatural entity who rises free from the flames of her imprisoning book as it burns. Compelled to follow Faro, Issaka is opening his eyes to their shared history and the ancestral wisdom of his own past.

Nnedi Okorafor’s The Black Pages is part of Black Stars, a multi-dimensional collection of speculative fiction from Black authors. Each story is a world much like our own. Read or listen to them in a single sitting.

Deep

interesting perspective on how one person's psyche might respond to such an event moving forward in life is always a challenge

This surprised me...

I didn't think I was going to get into this book, but I didn't want it to stop. There needs to be a part 2!

I just needed more!

I loved getting settled into the story, but I just needed more. Will this be made into a full novella at least?

Favorite narrator in the collection

I loved the story, it’s a world I absolutely want more of! And the writing was so well done. But honestly I’m a little in love with Naomi’s voice after this. In the beginning I actually struggled to focus on the content of the words because I was so memorised by the sound of her voice. I’m hoping she narrates more books soon!

Wonderful concept

The concept and opening scenes of this short story (novella?) are riveting. Some following scenes continue to renew that initial shock of deep satisfaction that the opening scenes gave. Unresolved and unclear, but engaging and memorable.

TW: Parental Loss

This story. . . it was nothing like I expected and honestly I'm not sure what I expected in the first place. What I got though was a powerful, moving story that still addresses themes present in the last one in regards to oppression and brought me to tears. The experience Issaka goes through as he returns to a home under the oppressive control of al-Qaeda is written and narrated so well, and hits you in the gut. With issues arising presently in regards to book bans - even talk of burning from some - to oppress groups this story holds a message that is timeless. One that we should never forget.
