About this listen

In her first new book in seven years, Tananarive Due further cements her status as a leading innovator in Black horror and Afrofuturism

"Due masterfully maintains suspense all the while delineating her characters with a psychological realism that makes the unbelievable credible."—Washington Post Book World

"Tananarive Due's characters quietly move into your heart and take up residence. You love them, you fear for them, and they scare you half to death."—Nalo Hopkinson, author of Skin Folk

American Book Award-winning author Tananarive Due's second collection of stories ranges from horror to science fiction to suspense. From the mysterious, magical town of Gracetown to the aftermath of a pandemic to the reaches of the far future, Due's stories all share a sense of dread and fear balanced with heart and hope. In some of these stories, the monster is racism itself; others address the monster within, or other universal struggles set against the supernatural or surreal. All of them are written with Due's trademark attention to detail and deep characterization. In addition to previously published work, this collection contains brand-new stories, including "Rumpus Room," a supernatural horror novelette set in Florida about a woman's struggle against both outer and inner demons.

Loved it. Filled with variety and just enough to leave you waiting to hear more about the storyline.

Another book of very imaginative stories from different point of views. I'm hope many will continue into a series

absolutely wonderful

Weird. It’s like listening to the radio and every song ends halfway through. Then, the next song immediately begins. To say you’re left hanging is an understatement.
I enjoyed the stories (or the beginning of them) and loved the narration.

No endings…

A lot of interesting and creative short stories, but they are mostly open ended leaving you wondering. Just a personal preference if mine, but I prefer closure and don't like open ended endings.

Open Endings

All the stories stopped before the end— like way before the end. It’s like if you watch The Shining and the movie ends at, “Here’s Johnny!” Or 2001 ends as Dave says, “Hal, Open the Pod Bay doors.” I mean sure, letting you imagine where a story leads can be cool, but these stop so early you don’t know what to wonder. I kept thinking the next one would be better. I didn’t think “short story” meant half a story. The narrator was great.

This is full of awesome stories! Some pretty dark stuff and some dark pretty stuff!

My only quibble would be the Ice cube reference. The character talks about how going nuts with an AK would be a very good day like Ice Cube says. But Ice Cube says it was a good day because he saw no violence and didn't have to use an AK!

Otherwise great work! There was one story that I had already seen elsewhere, and continuation of it!

Can't wait for the next!

Good except for the Ice Cube misqoute.

So many different tales , one great book! Her imagery is unmatched PERIOD. And she’s a Capricorn for any of you who are into astrology you know what I mean.
