About this listen

Five intergalactic criminal masterminds raid the tranquil world of Mount Pleasant, leaving behind only ruin and slaughter—and the orphaned child Kirth Gersen, who comes to manhood swearing to take bloody revenge. Now Gersen roams the galaxy, bringing vengeance to the Demon Princes one by one, in Jack Vance's classic series of hard-boiled space opera.

In the fifth and final book of the Demon Princes series, Gersen trails Howard Alan Treesong, notorious for his imaginative and horrifying revenges. But Treesong has a sentimental streak and longs for a childhood composition called The Book of Dreams. Exploiting this weakness, Gersen lures Treesong into a final confrontation.

The Book of Dreams by Jack Vance is a wonderfully constructed story which highlights Vance’s incredible use of dialogue and world building. The final chapter of Kirth Gerson’s quest against the Demon Princes could be Vance’s most engaging work. The final two chapters have moments that were truly jaw dropping.

Wonderful conclusion of a great series

I just completed listening to all five of the demon prince novels as read by Stefan Rudnicki. He does a superb job doing justice to a great series. Jack Vance’s writing is timeless and holds up well to modern ears.

The Best

Narrated to perfection! During 10-plus re-readings these past couple decaded, my mind's ear had heard a few names differenrly pronounced. I now revise them. The narration is perfect. Now to relisten to all five books start to finish.

My favorite SF series

Stefan Rudnicki gives a solid performance as usual, but can't save a weak story. The Demon Princes series isn't Jack Vance's best work and this is by far the worst entry in the series. Skip unless you are determined to read everything Vance did.

Though this series does not have many linear plot details connecting one book to another this was a rather anticlimactic end. You could swap this in the reading order and it would not change anything. Its not awful but more of the same with an abrupt end to everything.

Underwhelming Conclusion
