About this listen

Christmas comes to Arkham Horror in this action-packed eldritch adventure full of secret whispers, haunted streets, and a lost actor falling through time

Ruby Malone Gutierrez is running away, although she won't admit that to herself. Suffering from hearing loss after an illness, the former music teacher wants to find a way to retain her independence, but only a wealthy relative offers any hope of that. Put to work in her aunt Nova's Kingsport dance hall, Ruby stumbles upon a mystery when her new hearing aids begin picking up conversations that no one else can hear. As Christmas draws closer, Ruby realizes the voice comes from a hunted man lost in time. Now she must do everything she can to free him before the monsters chasing him can catch up and break through.

If you’re looking for all the action that other Arkham novels by fantasy flight provide, or the action from the various games, that’s not this.

There are some Lovecraft stories, even written by Lovecraft himself, that focus on seemingly mundane lives and a slow burn reveal of something otherworldly. Again, this isn’t an action novel, it’s more of a mystery novel.

These type of novels are actually more Lovecraft because Lovecraft’s own novels weren’t jampacked with action or characters that were ready for it. Lovecraft had several stories where it was just normal people going through their normal lives and discovering odd or horrible truths, usually by accident, and trying to deal with it or survive.

I actually like this story, but I wish the ending stretched out a little bit instead of wrapping up so fast. The reader’s voice is soothing, and she does a good job of changing her voice between the two characters. I feel like she really embodied the voice of The characters so this was very easy to listen to.

It is a little bit of a mystery, so everything will make sense later.

A delightful winter/Christmas Arkham Horror story! This book is on the pulpier side of the Mythos (which I love), as this combines Rosemary Jones' skill for creating compelling characters with the Cthulhu Mythos perils we associate with the Arkham Horror setting. I always appreciate when authors branch out to some of the expanded creations of the Mythos, and also appreciate the fact that it uses a creation from the Lovecraft circle. Don't want to say which it is, but if you're familiar with Mythos stories than you should enjoy the reference!

We shift between the POV of two different characters, and the way this was done was really creative with the time travel shenanigans. Their story was so precious! I was especially rooting for Paul, but Raquel's struggles also resonated with me. Rosemary Jones creates characters and relationships I can’t help but root for as they’re pitted against nasty beasties.

If you’re a fan of timey wimey stories, this is definitely a book you’ll want to pick up. Perfect reading for those long winter nights.

All my favorite characters from the Arkham games make cameos. But no new bad guys.

easy to listen, easy to follow.

Characters never in danger, no drawback of fighting Mythos. Livecraft universe is not a fairytale, and happily ever after does work and lessen the looming treat of the mythos
