About this listen
It is the autumn of 1880, and Dr. John Watson has just returned from Afghanistan. Badly injured and desperate to forget a nightmarish expedition that left him doubting his sanity, Watson is close to destitution when he meets the extraordinary Sherlock Holmes, who is investigating a series of deaths in the Shadwell district of London. Several bodies have been found, the victims appearing to have starved to death over the course of several weeks, and yet they were reported alive and well mere days before. Moreover, there are disturbing reports of creeping shadows that inspire dread in any who stray too close.
Holmes deduces a connection between the deaths and a sinister drug lord who is seeking to expand his criminal empire. Yet both he and Watson are soon forced to accept that there are forces at work far more powerful than they could ever have imagined. Forces that can be summoned, if one is brave - or mad - enough to dare …

Story
The year 1894. The monstrous Hound of the Baskervilles has been dead for five years, along with its no less monstrous owner, the naturalist Jack Stapleton. Sir Henry Baskerville is living contentedly at Baskerville Hall with his new wife, Audrey, and their three-year-old son, Harry. Until, that is, Audrey’s lifeless body is found on the moors, drained of blood. It would appear some fiendish creature is once more at large on Dartmoor and has, like its predecessor, targeted the unfortunate Baskerville family.

You touched the book. You're in the game. You're under the eye. The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why?

A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), The Stranger Times is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor...well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

Story
On a desolate beach in far northern Scotland, the winter storms have been washing up all manner of things since time began. But buried in the centre of one smaller iceberg is a shard of ancient Viking pottery telling a partial tale of a hidden mysterious island beyond the ice and mist, that was home to a great treasure and even greater horrors. Thawing in the same block of ice was a rotting flap of skin that refused to be identified but had similar skin patterns to a creature not seen for 100 million years.

Story
Sherlock Holmes is an unparalleled genius who uses the gift of deduction and reason to solve the most vexing of crimes. Warlock Holmes, however, is an idiot. A good man, perhaps; a font of arcane power, certainly. But he’s brilliantly dim. Frankly, he couldn’t deduce his way out of a paper bag. The only things he has really got going for him are the might of a thousand demons and his stalwart flatmate. Thankfully, Dr. Watson is always there to aid him through the treacherous shoals of Victorian propriety...

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Story
Sherlock Holmes’s discovery of a mysterious musical score initiates a devious Christmas challenge set by Irene Adler, with clues that are all variations on the theme of “theft without theft”, such as a statue missing from a museum found hidden in the room it was taken from. In the snowy London lead-up to Christmas, Holmes’s preoccupation with the “Adler Variations” risks him neglecting the case of his new client, Norwegian arctic explorer Fridtjof Nansen, who has received a series of threats in the form of animal carcasses left on his doorstep.

Story
Gather round as today’s most diabolically clever authors twist simple moments into otherworldly horrors. An empty baby stroller. A scratching underneath the bed. A farmhouse in the moonlight. With an unnerving sense of the macabre, these stories transform our greatest fears into bone-chilling realities.

Definitely not for Sherlock fans
Rather than invent a story that could be deemed as a Sherlock mystery, the author tried to reinvent the meeting and relationship between him and Dr. Watson. The author has tried (and in my view, failed) to write in Doyle/s style but other than using similar words and phrases, the narrative is in a totally different style. I was very dissapointed and although I tried to finish the book, it annoyed me so much, I just couldn't. This is definitely not for an ardent Holmes enthusiast!

I don’t know why other readers are rating this so low, as I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will definitely continue with the rest of the trilogy. Other reviewers are comparing it to crossover fanfiction but be that as it may it is well written and entertaining.

A charming return to the Great Detective's world
An utterly charming, and engaging additional to the cannon.
A good story with very sensitive and warm portrayals of Holmes and Watson. The language of the actual text is spot on! This added enormous atmosphere and a feeling of the piece being written by a Victorian or turn of the century author. This was so well done and researched.
The story was a little predictable, but a minor point. Young Holmes was appropriately vulnerable and youthful, not as snarls and acerbic as he is later on under Doyle.
In all good fun!!

Entertaining reinterpretation of both genres
I can’t think of a better fictional character to take on the Cthulhu mysteries. Overall, I found the reimagining fitting and the integration of the two genres was excellent. While the story itself seemed to big down in places, it was worth the investment to listen. If your a fan of either, you’ll probably enjoy it. If you love both, definitely check it out.

Great narration, great story
Loved it!
I'm new to Lovegrove, but not new to Holmes. I found this title did not include the misogynistic tendencies of other Holmes tales which often turned me off of the stories. Do be prepared for Oriental this and Oriental that, though. Perhaps a reflection of the times this book was written.
I loved the tale spun into Lovecraft's world of the Old Gods of Cthulhu (specifically Nyarlathotep). Told this way, Lovegrove rewrites some of the aspects of Holmes tales.
The narration was almost spot on. Easy to listen to and carries a great tone for story telling. During the encounter with some asian Opium Bath security folks I think the narrator lost his voices and mixed up some of the dialog. I do like that the author gives each character a unique voice.
