About this listen

The Everton murder case has long been closed. The culprit has been charged with the murder of his uncle and has served a year of his sentence already. Or has he? The evidence against Geoffrey Grey is convincing but his wife believes in his innocence. And so does her young cousin, Hilary, who decides to solve the mystery herself. But when Hilary herself is nearly murdered she turns in desperation to her ex-fiancé for help. He calls upon the services of Miss Silver to help solve another mystery, which she does in her own original style.

The Case is Closed

This is a promising new (old) series for me. I've read British mysteries for years, but only recently discovered Patricia Wentworth. Good plots, enjoyable characters & Miss Silver = a great read.

Beautifully narrated, beautifully written, I listen to these over and over and continue to enjoy Patricia Wentworth's observations on humankind.

Thoroughly Enjoyed This One!

I have read several Patricia Wentworth Mysteries and have loved all of them.
Great Narrator and unusual plots make for a wonderful Winter time experience.
It does not matter which book you choose as your first read. It is not necessary to read them in order. I hope Audible can get All of her books.

I really enjoyed this

Other commenters mentioned the pacing was a bit slow and the male romantic love interest unappealing but I do not agree with those complaints. I thought all the characters Wentworth used to build the story to be believable and either likable or understandable. The minor complaint I did have was that we the reader only get the briefest chance to know or explore the motivations and inner character of the victim and the villain in this story. I would have liked a few scenes with them to flesh out their characters. Otherwise the story held my interest and was well crafted. I tire of modern mystery fiction that spends so much time on gore and gruesome horrible people that I find these older mysteries with the emphasis on the mystery itself to be wonderful. Last but not least, the reader is excellent.

Another cozy gem by Patricia Wentworth

The portrayal of women in this wonderful series by Patricia Wentworth seems far ahead of its time. Or perhaps the attitude towards women in our culture rises and falls over the years and we are just coming out of another slump. The book was first published in 1937, at the height of the Great Depression when many women had to work to help support their families. Of course, the "roaring twenties" was a period when women finally threw off the yoke of the Victorian era; women in the US got the vote in 1920. But women really shine in Ms. Wentworth's stories and this one is no exception. The character with the most initiative and courage is Hilary, a twenty something who is currently unemployed. The story takes place after the conviction of Hilary's cousin's husband in the Everton murder. Hilary does not believe in his guilt and sets out to prove otherwise. The prose is excellent and the narrator seals the deal. Highly recommended for Agatha Christie fans or cozy mystery fans in general.

Tedious and repetitive

Oh dear. Not even the excellent narrator nor the appearance, finally, of the inimitable Miss Singer could salvage this one. The heroine seems unusually dense and the man in her life is boorish. Events are discussed ad nauseam and how the murder was accomplished was apparent from the start. This is one of the weaker books in the series.

Tightly woven tale

This story is really amazingly simple and transparent. It is also repetitive and goes over and over the same meager details until i wanted to stop listening, but I did not. I found I enjoyed the tale as it was crafted and thought it was a nice little listen.

English cozy

This is an old-fashioned English cozy with a good mystery. Surprising strong female characters for the time period.

Good story

Unfortunately PW includes an infuriatingly arrogant and dim witted male romantic interest which drops the whole story down to the level of a contrived melodrama. Usually she is miles above that type of lame plot device. Otherwise the mystery is ok and the narration excellent.
