“Lichtman has written what may be the most important book of the year.” (The Hill)
What are the ranges and limitations of presidential authority? What are the standards of truthfulness that a president must uphold? What will it take to impeach Donald J. Trump? Professor Allan J. Lichtman, who has correctly forecasted 30 years of presidential outcomes, answers these questions, and more, in The Case for Impeachment - a deeply convincing argument for impeaching the 45th president of the United States.
In the fall of 2016, Allan J. Lichtman made headlines when he predicted that Donald J. Trump would defeat the heavily favored Democrat, Hillary Clinton, to win the presidential election. Now, in clear, nonpartisan terms, Lichtman lays out the reasons Congress could remove Trump from the Oval Office: his ties to Russia before and after the election, the complicated financial conflicts of interest at home and abroad, and his abuse of executive authority.
The Case for Impeachment also offers a fascinating look at presidential impeachments throughout American history, including the often-overlooked story of Andrew Johnson’s impeachment, details about Richard Nixon’s resignation, and Bill Clinton’s hearings. Lichtman shows how Trump exhibits many of the flaws (and more) that have doomed past presidents. As the Nixon Administration dismissed the reporting of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein as “character assassination” and “a vicious abuse of the journalistic process,” Trump has attacked the “dishonest media,” claiming, “the press should be ashamed of themselves.”
Historians, legal scholars, and politicians alike agree: We are in politically uncharted waters - the durability of our institutions is being undermined and the public’s confidence in them is eroding, threatening American democracy itself.
Most citizens - politics aside - want to know where the country is headed. Lichtman argues, with clarity and power, that for Donald Trump’s presidency, smoke has become fire.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Case for Impeachment to be better than the print version?
Every American should read this - no matter your political persuasion. You may or may not agree with the author's assertion that the book is even-handed politically - (I agree that it is, although I am not a Trump supporter), but I feel all Americans should better understand a few things that this book strongly presents:1) Which actions & matters can lead to impeachment - Impeachment happens so rarely that the great majority of Americans have no idea what factors may actually play a role. This book illustrates different impeachable offenses by referring to historical examples and relating them to the current President's actions when applicable.
2) Donald Trump's previous actions, in a wide range of contexts, that could/would qualify him for impeachment. No matter your political persuasion, Americans should know the things that Trump is on record as having done. You may be surprised. If you're a Trump supporter, even if you may find that you're not very concerned, you will be more informed and able to better talk about or think through these past actions when they come up in conversation or news stories.
3) What Trump can do to avoid impeachment. Again, no matter your political persuasion, these specifics are important to be aware of. If you are not a Trump supporter, knowing Trump's expected plans of defense will alert you if/when he begins circling his wagons. Unlike other reviewers, I think this information was valuable to include in the book so we can better interpret and respond to what we're likely to see happening in the future.
At the most basic level, I feel it's valuable for Americans to know the offenses Trump has already committed and which are most likely to lead to impeachment. On election night, I was hoping that someone would quickly write this book, I'm so glad Lichtman was the author and that he did so well putting these issues, applicable previous offenses, and the brief historical context surrounding impeachment into layman's terms.
Very worth your time - direct and to the point.
Every American should read this!
