About this listen

While enjoying a leisurely ocean cruise in the company of secretary Della Street, Perry Mason is approached by passenger who is worried about the wellbeing of her husband. Not long afterward, her husband is seen jumping off the ship, an apparent suicide - but when the body is recovered, it turns out that he was shot. Accused of murder, the wife puts her fate in the hands of Perry, who in the course of piecing things together unearths the fact that the husband had once accepted a huge bribe while serving on a jury. The case takes many shocking twists and turns before revealing its surprising conclusion.

I’m binge listening to the P. Mason books one after another and this book is the best I’ve heard. It may not be as mysterious as some of the former books but it does have some very enjoyable twists that push it to the top.

A quick note; There are phrases and language that we, with the benefit of nearly a century worths of knowledge, wisdom, and experiences, know to be wrong and insensitive. But works of fiction cannot be judged by what we now know, but must be seen as a product of the era and culture in which it was written. So if such currently objectionable language is something you cannot read or hear without it causing you to be offended or upset you should not listen to these books. And you must also understand that people who do enjoy the books are not endorsing the remarks and racially charged language in any way shape or form. And finally, you must understand that there are people who can understand that all art is a product of its time and can only be seen through that lens.

Alexander Cendese is a treasure and his ability to perform numerous characters in voices that are instantly recognized is a gift.

Enjoy your day!

The best one so far.

I really loved this one. It has a different setting than most since some of it takes place on a ship. Perry really has his work cut out for him trying to solve this case and help his client. He, Della, and Paul go on some dangerous adventures to get at the truth. As usual Perry wins in the ultimate courtroom showdown.

Perry Mason at his best!

I enjoyed this mystery and there was a twist I didn’t see coming! I particularly liked the courtroom scenes.

Good mystery

I love the San Francisco setting, the development of relationships, etc etc. there’s some really dated (racist) language, but I still really enjoyed it

Not just repetitive!

A thoroughly entertaining story, even though I had seen the tv episode based on it this was significantly different enough to leave me guessing at many parts. It does have dated racist language though, so bear in mind

Like most of the books in the Perry Mason series, this one has many threads that are intertwined to make a complicated puzzle.
Perhaps what I love most about this particular book is that it helps to define the relationship between Della Street & Perry Mason.

One of my fav Perry Mason books!

I really enjoyed the plot with its many twists and the unexpected resolution. I also got attached to the acting, Perry and Della's voices are so distinctive (and fun)!

One of the best

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

The racial slurs of the story line in which he refers to the Nigger in the wood pile.

The brilliant mind of Perry Mason
