About this listen
Curious how cats shaped US history?
Love a darn-good all-American cat story?
Did you know:
- A cat from the Mayflower gave birth on Plymouth Rock?
- That Abraham Lincoln fed his darling Tabby with a golden spoon?
- A fancy show cat named Cherry Pop was presented with the keys to San Francisco?
- Alaskan prospectors paid dearly for expert rodent control - with gold dust?
This unique book has a ton of fun cat stories, unusual trivia, and quirky feline facts that are sure to entertain you.
Now you can discover:
- How brave mama cats stopped kidnappers and dragged kittens from the flames
- How ordinary, everyday cats broke into show business and advertising
- How a Texas tabby lived to be 38
- Why astronauts at NASA look to our feline friends for guidance
- How Hemingway founded his very own cat dynasty
- How "cat signs" led lonely, wandering hobos to warm meals from kindly ladies
- And how your darling little kitten just might be a tax deduction
My name is Seamus Mullarkey. For the past year, I've been looking up old newspapers, leafing through out-of-print books, and scouring the internet to get to the heart of just how those darn kitties have won our nation's hearts. I've collected all that fascinating information within this entertaining and intriguing little book.

Story
He's not kept a diary for decades but here, in Dog Days, Andrew Cotter draws inspiration from the great Samuel Pepys; like him, he bears witness to the extraordinary everyday as the world tilts on its axis in our own unsettling era. And so, with Olive and Mabel at his side - actually, dawdling in the long grass or sleeping upside down - Andrew takes a clear-eyed, often hilarious walk through a year that encompasses all of life from the crushingly mundane to the decidedly odd.

Story
The inimitably witty David Rakoff, New York Times best-selling author of Don’t Get Too Comfortable, defends the commonsensical notion that you should always assume the worst, because you’ll never be disappointed. In this deeply funny (and, no kidding, wise and poignant) audiobook, Rakoff examines the realities of our sunny, gosh everyone-can-be-a-star contemporary culture and finds that, pretty much as a universal rule, the best is not yet to come, adversity will triumph, justice will not be served, and your dreams won’t come true.

Story
When Bronwen Dickey brought her new dog home, she saw no traces of the infamous viciousness in her affectionate, timid pit bull. Which made her wonder: How had the breed - beloved by Teddy Roosevelt, Helen Keller, and TV's Little Rascals - come to be known as a brutal fighter? Her search for answers takes her from 19th-century New York City dogfighting pits - the cruelty of which drew the attention of the recently formed ASPCA - to early 20th-century movie sets where pit bulls cavorted with Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton.

A naturalist who spent months at a time living on her own among wild creatures in remote jungles, Sy Montgomery had always felt more comfortable with animals than with people. So she gladly opened her heart to a sick piglet who had been crowded away from nourishing meals by his stronger siblings. Yet Sy had no inkling that this piglet, later named Christopher Hogwood, would not only survive but flourish.

Genuinely Interesting & Light-Hearted Trivia for Animal Lovers
This is a light-hearted read that draws the reader in. It’s an interesting window into cats and how they have been intertwined in American life from the era of Native Americans right up to the meme cats we are so familiar with today. The insights are long enough to draw in the reader but short enough to not get bogged down in detail. It touches on a variety of subjects from cats in the White House, to advertising, to cats in their roles in the witch trials. The writer’s style is engaging and carries one along effortlessly onto the next chapter. It’s a must for animal lovers or indeed anyone interested in trivia, American history or for an escape from the toxic world of today’s media! Would be interested to read the author’s take on other subjects.
