About this listen

In the aftermath of World War I, nurse Bess Crawford is caught in a deadly feud between two families in this thirteenth book in the beloved mystery series from New York Times bestselling author Charles Todd.

Restless and uncertain of her future in the wake of World War I, former battlefield nurse Bess Crawford agrees to travel to Yorkshire to help a friend of her cousin Melinda through surgery. But circumstances change suddenly when news of a terrible accident reaches them. Bess agrees to go to isolated Scarfdale and the Neville family, where one man has been killed and another gravely injured. The police are asking questions, and Bess is quickly drawn into the fray as two once close families take sides, even as they are forced to remain in the same house until the inquest is completed.

When another tragedy strikes, the police are ready to make an arrest. Bess struggles to keep order as tensions rise and shots are fired. What dark truth is behind these deaths? And what about the tale of an older murder—one that doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the Nevilles? Bess is unaware that when she passes the story on to Cousin Melinda, she will set in motion a revelation with the potential to change the lives of those she loves most—her parents, and her dearest friend, Simon Brandon…

Loved this

Slow start but great story. Bess will find an adventure when she takes care of an aging Lady Beatrice.

Another entrancing story

I waited 9 months for this latest installment of the Bess Crawford series and it was worth the wait. You find yourself in England 1919, swept away by the vivid imagery the writing provokes. I cannot wait for the next installment.

Cliff hanger

This one leaves you hanging regarding unresolved matters from the previous book. Wish I had waited for the next one and read them one after the other. Now I have to wait a year or two for the resolution.

Good but definitely NOT the best!

While this Bess book was good, and that it was a setup for revealing Simon's story, it fell wholly short because Simon was completely missing-not even a peep. The ultra bad thing is that we have to wait another year to see Bess and Simon back together! Hurry up and write faster, Charles Todd!

Stellar

Good puzzle, lots of clues, lots of suspects. Bess goes to Yorkshire to help out yet another person and ends up involved in another murder mystery. Fascinating ending that will make you yearn for another book to materialize immediately.

As always, Rosalyn Landor does an excellent job of narration. I think with each book she gets a little better at differentiating the voices of the multiple male characters.

When we left our heroine last time...

At the end of the last installment in this series, it seemed as though romance had finally bloomed between Bess and our favorite heartthrob; after all, we're now into Book 13 and the Great War has been over for a while. Isn't it time? I expected this to be the book in which the joyous couple ride off into the sunset and begin their life together, perhaps solving a few mysteries along the way. Alas, an unexplained misunderstanding has reared its ugly head, and here we are with an episode that could easily have occurred about six books back. That said, I've enjoyed all the books in this series and in the authors' Ian Rutledge series. The occasional mention of the characters in one series in the other series is fun. Am I the only one who's thinking that if things don't work out between Bess and our favorite heartthrob in this series (no spoilers), how about Bess and Ian Rutledge?

Great sequel in the Bess Crawford series

Excellent mystery and complicated characters and plot as usual. I love that it is done by the same narrator, who is quite good. It is interesting that there are some of the same characters as in the Ian Rutledge series, so we glimpse them as distant friends. I am looking forward to reading the next one!
