Charles Chesnutt
About this listen
The biracial Charles W. Chesnutt ranks among the 20th-century’s most important civil rights advocates. Published in 1905, The Colonel’s Dream was extremely progressive and controversial for its time. When former Confederate officer Colonel French returns to his North Carolina hometown after building his fortune in the North, he intends to create better economic conditions for those who have only known hardship. But there is a new social order in the South that stands in his way. Men the colonel once awed now berate him and his idealism—and are determined to make him fail.

Story
In the aftermath of the Civil War, siblings Rena and John Walden seek a better life for themselves by passing as white in their new home state of South Carolina. John’s success as an attorney and marriage to a white Southerner help cement his own place, but Rena’s engagement to John’s best friend brings a new level of scrutiny that threatens to expose them both. As the rewards increase, so does the risk, and ultimately, the color line seems determined to re-exert itself.

Story
Dorothea Brooke is an ardent idealist who represses her vivacity and intelligence for the cold, theological pedant Casaubon. One man understands her true nature: the artist Will Ladislaw. But how can love triumph against her sense of duty and Casaubon’s mean spirit? Meanwhile, in the little world of Middlemarch, the broader world is mirrored: the world of politics, social change, and reforms, as well as betrayal, greed, blackmail, ambition, and disappointment.

Originally published anonymously in 1912, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man revealed as never before the color line dividing America, and the price it exacted on those souls who could traverse the two worlds. The book presents the fictional account of "an ex-colored man" - an African-American who could pass for white - as he attempts to choose which side of the line will better suit his life, and his psyche.

Sister Carrie is an epic of urban life, the story of an innocent heroine adrift in an indifferent city. Story
Harriet Jacobs’ autobiography, written under the pseudonym Linda Brent, details her experiences as a slave in North Carolina, her escape to freedom in the north, and her ensuing struggles to free her children. The narrative was partly serialized in the New York Tribune, but was discontinued because Jacobs’ depictions of the sexual abuse of female slaves were considered too shocking. It was published in book form in 1861.

Editorial reviews
Returning from New York City to his North Carolina home at the end of Reconstruction, Colonel French, a former Confederate officer, is shocked by the conditions of both blacks and whites. Using his new fortune, he begins renovating the schools, rebuilding a cotton mill, and fighting the practice of "enslaving" blacks to plantations. Kevin R. Free's quiet narration enlivens Chesnutt's novel about the failures of Reconstruction and the South's struggle to find purpose and prosperity. Free creates subtle Southern accents for the high-born whites, thicker accents for the poor whites, and dialect for the blacks.

Story
Impoverished young aristocrat Eugene de Rastignac is determined to climb the social ladder and impress himself on Parisian high society. While staying at the Maison Vauquer, a boarding house in Paris's rue Neuve-Sainte-Genevieve, he encounters Jean-Joachim Goriot, a retired vermicelli maker who has spent his entire fortune supporting his two daughters. The boarders strike up a friendship and Goriot learns of Rastignac's feelings for his daughter Delphine.

Story
Originally published anonymously in 1912, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man revealed as never before the color line dividing America, and the price it exacted on those souls who could traverse the two worlds. The book presents the fictional account of "an ex-colored man" - an African-American who could pass for white - as he attempts to choose which side of the line will better suit his life, and his psyche.

Bigger, newer, faster. Demolish and rebuild, then demolish and rebuild again. Smoke, soot, and noise are the badges of prosperity, and growth is for growth's sake.
