About this listen

A split-screen view of the tech industry’s underbelly—and the unifying campaign of two distant women seeking to expose their employer—by Lisa Ko, award-winning author of The Leavers.

In this eye-opening short story, a tech reporter’s mistake unites two women eight thousand miles apart. One in New Jersey, one in the Philippines. Same name: Sandra Guzman. Same job: content moderators for a mega social media website. What transpires between them is a friendship that changes their perceptions of each other’s privilege and challenges the power of the very industry they work for.

Lisa Ko’s The Contractors is part of Out of Line, an incisive collection of funny, enraging, and hopeful stories of women’s empowerment and escape. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single thought-provoking sitting.

Audible narration by Lea Salonga (Aladdin)

I found trhe context and characters interesting and believable ~ though the story is far-fetched.

I love what the author did, juxtaposing two women who share the same name and same job for the same company halfway around the world. But I hate that this story is true for so many - and can’t bear to think about what a job like that would do to a person’s soul, day after day.

Disparities abound

This seemed truncated, like whatever was supposed to happen didn’t, and it just ended. I listened to the entire thing hoping for something interesting to appear. It never did.

Not much there

If you have a terrible Turkey, named “Turkey.” Please don’t write a book on someone else’s chicken that was named “Turkey.” This the audible version of that example but with Philippine woman.

Just not good

There's a lot that could have been improved on the short story. It sounds like a high school paper. The narrator paused too much to change voices. if she had made them twins they were separated at birth and the story would have had a real good punch

Meh.

Couldn’t get past the first 10 minutes. Why are authors writing this filth? Very disappointed with audios free books. I’ll probably end my membership

Extra stupid

if I hadn't been painting I would have stopped and deleted this book. extremely hard to follow with both main characters with similar names. I wouldn't recommend this book.
