Publisher's summary

For Sergeant Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police, the case begins when he finds a pair of boots in the rabbit brush beside a wilderness trail. The boots' owner lies nearby, his palms and soles "scalped" in what appears to be a witch's scavenging. The federal investigators tell Chee to mind his own business. But a series of disturbing events draws Chee into a dangerous web of intrigue spun by Navajo sorcery and white greed.

Chills & Thrills

Loved the descriptions of landscape, the teachings about indigenous ways of thinking and different tribal traditions. Chee’s adventure as a new tribal police officer is full of twists and turns that are engaging and inspire respect for his ingenuity and courage. Hillerman presents lots to think about as you read and after you finish the book!

Easy to follow

Several times the author had the main character, Chee, review what what he knew. This helped me to keep track of the characters and plot. Great read.

superb plotting

The plot is intricate but developed so the reader has a chance of working out some, though not all of the solution to the puzzles. Even figuring out some answers, you're held to the he last page to see all the answers and understand the consequences of the believable and likeable characters. As for the narration - pleasurable: like listening to stories told by a favorite relative.

Love the narrator, love the character: Jim Chee

I liked it all but know it’s really about the talent of yes , the author but in an audio book it’s all about the talent of the narrator!!!

Interesting story. Likable Chee. Missed Leaphorn

Especially found all the tribal rituals and family/clan discussion interesting. And creates more respect for a culture/s which are different from what I know.

I love hillerman's books

Tony hillerman's books on the Southwest people are some of my favorites ever. these original Works recorded by George Guidall to me are the ones to listen to. there appears to be a new series generated by another narator that I think are not nearly as good. so I suggest you get all these before they disappear. it's also disappointed to see so many of these audio books are out of print. they should be available forever.

Good story presented well

The view into the southwest is a great backdrop for a good mystery. It's presented well, in a way that doesn't conflict with the setting or the characters

A peak into Navajo culture

Loved the traditional Navajo culture expertly wove into the plot. George Guidall gave life to the characters.
