About this listen

Bestselling author Martin Walker pens stories filled with small-town ambience and charming characters. In The Devil’s Cave, police chief Bruno Courréges is investigating a murder as the tiny French village of St. Denis prepares for Easter. An unknown woman - dead, naked, and bearing the marks of a black magic ritual - is found in a boat floating down the River Vézère. With the townsfolk terrified, clues quickly lead Bruno to the Gouffre de Colombac - the Devil’s Cave.

Good read!

This one starts with a body, progresses to an impression of devil worship and drugs, discovers one large fraudulent deception, and lots more. I love this series!
Voice actor Robert Ian MacKenzie is excellent with interpretation and character definition, and superior in the rolling tones of French pronunciations.

Another fabulous Bruno adventure.

Great series; great book; great food; great characters; great narration. I just want Bruno to finally settle on one woman. :-)

Another enjoyable Bruno mystery

We like how these go. The pace is relaxed but steady. The stakes are real but not world shaking.
The clues turn up in believable order. The talk sounds like real sorts of talk. We like the way Bruno works fir harmony in his town as a main goal yet can also relate to the unvirtuous.

the series gets a little less believable

in my humble opinion, the story gets too far away from reality. I loved the focus on the main character, the food from the region.

A Challenging Read...

As I finished the fifth installment of Bruno's adventures, I wonder about my desire to keep on going, and yet it is there. I have learned so much about French history, which is appropriate in our present state of world affairs. But I know there is so much I miss out on, having no French language experience. So much French, most of it not translated is frustrating. But the characters, and Bruno, especially, are so real and complex, that you just want to stay with it.
The best comparison I can think of is that the series reminds me of Louise Penny's Three Pines series...which she can't publish fast enough for me. Anyway, this series really makes me want a Bassett Hound!!!!!8

Fascinating story

This was well written and captivating. There was rather a lot of sordid sexual imagery that I didn't like it because the book has some sex-related themes or I would have enjoyed it a lot more.
