About this listen
Over the past decade financial service innovations have contributed to a completely new way in which customers can bank, threatening the status quo of traditional retail banks, and redefining a banking model which has been in place for generations. These new technological advancements have facilitated the rapid emergence of digital banking firms and FinTech companies, leading to established banks being forced to swiftly increase their pace of digital adoption to stay relevant and stop mass client attrition to these agile financial start-ups. These threats come at an inopportune time for banks due to mature markets currently experiencing stagnant growth. This coupled with decreasing profit margins due to the competitive pricing of new entrants, and financial customer loyalty becoming ever increasingly more tenuous.

During the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, our financial infrastructure failed. Governments bailed out the very institutions that let the economy down. This episode spurred a serious rethink of our financial system. In DeFi and the Future of Finance, Campbell R. Harvey, Ashwin Ramachandran, and Joey Santoro introduce the new world of decentralized finance. The book argues that the current financial landscape is ripe for disruption and we are seeing, in real time, the reinvention of finance.

Small businesses are the backbone of the US economy. They are the biggest job creators and offer a path to the American dream. But for many, it is difficult to get the capital they need to operate and succeed. In the Great Recession, access to capital for small businesses froze and in the aftermath, many community banks shuttered their doors and other lenders that had weathered the storm turned to more profitable avenues. For years after the financial crisis, the outlook for many small businesses was bleak. But then a new dawn of financial technology, or 'fintech', emerged.

What do Google, Snapchat, Tinder, Amazon, and Uber have in common, besides soaring market share? They're platforms - a new business model that has quietly become the only game in town. A platform, by definition, creates value by facilitating an exchange between two or more interdependent groups. So, rather than making things, they simply connect people. The advent of mobile computing and its ubiquitous connectivity have forever altered how we interact with each other. Yet, few people truly grasp the radical structural shifts of the last 10 years.

The frontier is a truly different world where startups often must cope with political or economic instability and lack of infrastructure, and where there might be little or no access to angel investors, venture capitalists, or experienced employee pools.

Absolutely incredible, truly an enjoyable listen!
If you could sum up The Digital Banking Revolution in three words, what would they be?
Informative, revolutionary, and fascinating!
What other book might you compare The Digital Banking Revolution to and why?
I honestly can't think of anything that compares to this book - There's so much new and intriguing information in this that nothing even comes close to being on par or similar to this.
Which scene was your favorite?
There are no "scenes" per se in this book as it's non-fiction, but I particularly liked that the entire book was on various technological advances in the industry - Being a programmer myself I found this absolutely fascinating.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Technology - For better or for worse?
While there's a lot of technological advances in the banking industry, I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not - It allows potentially corrupt bankers to either manipulate or predict how the industry will go, and this could be terrifying for some people!
Any additional comments?
I'd recommend this book to anyone whether they're interested in banking/finance or not - I'm not but it appealed to me as a programmer, and I definitely don't regret it - It was absolutely fascinating from start to finish even to an outsider of the industry.
Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

Surprisingly entertaining listen
The potted history of money and banking - fascinating. The clarion call to current day banks - informative. I greatly enjoyed this book and learning about how digital technologies are revolutionising this central feature of commerce. I would have two suggestions for the author. I would love to have the whole manuscript processed through Hemingway Editor to get rid of rambling sentences and stacked nouns. And I would have the narration track edited for stumbles and the odd repeated sentence. Well worth the listen; it would have even more if a joy with that bit of extra effort.

Fantastic book about the changes that must be made
The author gives a good history of the banking world, from the origins of banking to modern day. Then explains the technology that is coming into play today and why things are changing. He finishes the book with some strong words of warning to banks who are not innovating fast enough and prophesies what will happen if they refuse to move forwards.
Great read
