About this listen

On the cusp of turning 65, a man and his beloved rescue dog of similar vintage take a poignant, often bemusing, and keenly observed journey across America and discover a big-hearted, welcoming country filled with memorable characters, a newfound appreciation for the life they temporarily left behind, and a determination to live more fully in the moment as old age looms.

Inspired by John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley, Zheutlin hits the road for a 9,000-mile odyssey with Albie to experience all that American is and means today. Similar in approach and tone to Bill Bryson’s best-selling travel classics, but with an endearing canine sidekick, The Dog Went Over the Mountain will delight dog lovers, baby boomers, and anyone who seeks to experience life on the open road with a four-legged companion.

Worth reading despite some biases

I loved the concept of traveling the country with a dog. They have such a wonderful way of bringing people together. In some ways it reminded me of a modern version of Peter Jenkins’ Walk Across America. He made repeated references to Woodie Guthrie and John Steinbeck, which got old really quickly. He horribly mispronounced the name of my hometown (Maryville, TN) throughout the audiobook. It is pronounced Mare-ah-vulle, though we sometimes jokingly call it Mur-vulle. The guy who told him to pronounce it like that was pulling his leg and he didn’t know it! He seemed to have a lot of biases against the south, conservatives, and Christians and to genuinely misunderstand us. That made me sad, but he at least seemed to recognize that he has those biases. Also, he said it was not going to be a political book, but he couldn’t seem to resist slipping those references in throughout it. That made it somewhat less enjoyable to read as I was expecting a book to escape from politics. Despite these shortcomings, I do still recommend this audiobook overall as it was entertaining, somewhat informative, and highlights the special relationship between a dog and his human.
