About this listen

After living in the United States for years, Maneka Roy returns home to India to mourn the loss of her mother and finds herself in a new world.

The booming city of Hrishipur where her father now lives is nothing like the part of the country where she grew up, and the more she sees of this new, sparkling city, the more she learns that nothing―and no one―here is as it appears. Ultimately, it will take an unexpected tragic event for Maneka and those around her to finally understand just how fragile life is in this city built on aspirations.

Written from the perspectives of ten different characters, Oindrila Mukherjee’s incisive debut novel explores class divisions, gender roles, and stories of survival within a society that is constantly changing and becoming increasingly Americanized.

It is a story about India today and people impacted by globalization everywhere: a tale of ambition, longing, and bitter loss that asks what it really costs to try and build a dream.

I loved the book in general. It was a very good story. I do disagree with the narrator. It was incredibly hard listening to a story set in India yet has an American dialect. In one statement it was pointed out that even though she lived in America for 12 years she does not have an American accent. If they make a statement like that you would expect to hear a person read with a native dialect..

Hard to get submerged in the story

A tale of international delight. I was firmly impressed. A tale of love and loss, family, dreams, hope and hopelessness. Very gripping from the beginning. l felt like I knew every character.

Great Book

This book was only average until the last hour and a half or so when something actually happened. This last section was very well written and redeemed the book in my estimation.

Got Better Near the End

I thought this sounded interesting, but the off-putting inclusion of snarky and totally unnecessary comments about American politics quickly ended my interest. I'll avoid this author in the future.

Bizarre insertion of politics

I had just finished The Covenant of Water and LOVED it and thought I'd enjoy another story set in India. I couldn't not connect with any character and found none too likeable. They were all so miserable and without hope. Possibly that is India, but I just pitied the characters that I didn't find abhorrent. The narrator was a try-hard, and over-acted the voice of any female with social standing. I've never heard anyone speak like that unless they were in a 1940's movie. It was long and dull with no ROI.

Depressing
