About this listen

Daffodil Farthingale, known as Dillie to her friends and family, is horrified to learn the man she has just rescued from ruffians outside the Farthingale townhouse is none other than Ian Markham, the notorious Duke of Edgeware. If the Chipping Way bachelor curse holds true, she is doomed to marry the wretched rakehell.

Dillie wants a man who will love her and be faithful in the marriage. The duke will never do, for he harbors secret torments and has sworn he will never fall in love or marry. When scandal breaks - after all, he does spend a week recovering in her bed - Dillie leaves London, little knowing that the handsome duke has just left town as well.

With the Farthingale family and his assailants on their trail, Ian and Dillie suddenly find themselves trapped in the same charming inn during a torrential rainstorm. Can Ian overcome his haunted past, and can Dillie ever overcome her mistrust of him to wind up falling in love?

The Duke I’m Going to Marry is an entertaining, often humorous, Regency Romance with a bit of spice.

The narrator of the audiobook does a terrific job breathing life into the characters and emotion and humor into the words.

Recommended for mature readers/ listeners: contains sex scenes.

The Duke I'm Going to Marry is an entertaining historical Regency romance by Meara Platt. It is the 2nd book in the Farthingale series and revolves around Daffodil “Dillie” Farthingale, the “other” twin introduced in the 1st book in the series. Although this story has some suspense in it, with someone attempting to kill our hero on more than one occasion; it is not as adventurous as My Fair Lily, wherein the couple experience a few shootings, explosions, and an abduction. Instead, this story focuses on the romance.

The story begins when Dillie rescues the notorious Ian Markham, the Duke of Edgeware, outside the Farthingale townhouse by firing an elephant gun at his assailants. Dillie is level-headed and resourceful and immediately takes charge; you could call her a “bossy set of goods.” She brings Ian inside her home so her uncle who is a doctor can save his life. After Ian spends one week recovering in the Farthingale home, with Lily playing nursemaid to him, scandal breaks ruining Dillie’s reputation. When Ian does the honorable thing and proposes marriage to Dillie, she turns him down flat.

Although extremely attracted to Ian both physically and mentally, Dillie wants a man who will love her and be faithful to her in their marriage, which she doesn’t believe Ian can do. After turning down the proposal, Dillie escapes to the country, little knowing that the Ian left town as well. When a late winter storm destroys Dillie’s carriage, she soon finds herself in the same charming inn as Ian. It is here that Dillie persuades Ian to forgive himself for a tragedy that happened when he was a little boy. She also convinces him that he is worthy of and deserves a happily ever-after.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audiobook version of this story narrated by Hollis McCarthy. She exhibits the right amount of worry, exasperation, and yearning in all the right places. I can’t wait to start listening to the next Farthingale sister’s book!

The story was a bit over-the-top in the graphic sex for my taste, but Hollis McCarthy's narration was spot on and wonderful!
