Publisher's summary

Berlin, 1944. Ariella Bannon is being hunted. Someone is determined to betray her as a Jew, but she has survived against incredible odds, and the end is in sight. She will be reunited with her precious children, no matter what it takes.

Meanwhile, Liesl and Erich have found a home in Ireland away from the chaos of war-ravaged Europe. As the dark news of what has happened to the Jews filters through, they are torn—love for their mother and their home on one hand, and the profound sense of peace and belonging they have in Ballycreggan on the other. Like all of the other children who escaped Nazi territory on the Kindertransport, they must wait to hear the fate of their loved ones.

For their foster parents, Elizabeth and Daniel, their dearest wish, that Ariella would survive the war, is also their deepest fear. Would her return mean the loss of the children they have come to think of as their own?

As the Third Reich crumbles under relentless Allied bombs, Ariella is careful, but Berlin is a very dangerous place to be, and somebody knows she survived. Can she take one last enormous risk to be reunited with Liesl and Erich or will her betrayer see her finally captured?

The Emerald Horizon is the long awaited sequel to the best-seller, The Star and the Shamrock.

A WWII novel with a redemptive theme

This book and its prequel, “The Star and the Shamrock,” describe the horrific circumstances in Berlin during WWII, but woven throughout is a deeply human story about how a family survives. It’s refreshing to find goodness and human kindness intermixed with the wrenching circumstances of war. The author avoids using scandal or intrigue to entice the reader. Her characters are real people with good intent. Read by Siobhan Waring, the story is told with a pleasing Irish lilt.

A Wonderful story of Love and Courage.

I loved this novel and the previous one as well.
The characters, the setting and the history
all combined to make a wonderful sad but heartfelt
Story. Thank you Jean Grainger!

Wonderful historical fiction!

Being an Irish-Slovakian Jew, I LOVED this story! I am in my early fifties, and I grew up hearing stories about the war, and the atrocities of the Holocaust from my grandparents. The historical facts in this book are correct, and the story is riveting. The narrator really makes the characters come to life! Jean, you should consider making this a trilogy!

Great historical perspective

Great story with historical detail. Follows up on events of “the star and the shamrock “ seamlessly. Heart wrenching but beautifully written. Very talented narrator who does excellent job switching between genders and accents.

Even better than book 1!

I actually enjoyed this book more than the first in the series, which is unusual.
I really aopreciate how the author makes it a point to stress that you can not base a whole people on the actions of a few. Not all Germans were Nazis and not all Russians were rapists and brutes.
Narration was very well done.
