About this listen

"I knew the mechanics of death - and I was caught in its gears."

Avery Cates is a wanted man. After surviving the worst bioengineered disaster in history, Cates finds himself incarcerated - in Chengara Penitentiary. As Chengara has a survival rate of exactly zero, the system's most famous gunner must do some serious plotting. And a betrayal or so later, he achieves his goal. At a price. All he has to do now is defeat some new personal demons, forge some unlikely alliances, and figure out why the people he's killed lately just won't stay dead.

Somers is the guy to write it. McLaren is the guy to read it.

Cates is a remarkable antihero, a likable hit man who never stops roughing up weaker people, but always seems to wind up saving them. And the background, so bleak, always ends up yielding some of the most interesting ideas. As for McLaren, he’s perfect for the role, never overplaying it, never “acting.” Quite a team.

Absolutely fantastic

This is the best of the series, so far. The narrative style changes for this one, describing two different timelines that come together in a surprising, and for me, unexpected development. As always, if what you are looking for is pink unicorns and floating hearts, look elsewhere. If you want a gritty and exciting post-Apocalyptic-cyber-punk story, this definitely satisfies.
